A childhood favorite now shared with my own children!

When I was a child, I found this book through our school library and fell in love with it. The sweet story and colorful illustrations captured me as a little one. My brother and I checked it out over and over for many years in elementary school. It wasn't til I had a child of my own, that a random memory of this wonderful story sent me on a crazed search for the book. Now we own it and read it often, my son loves it as much as I did. My searching also led me to these books as well......so if you love "Herman the Helper" be sure to check out these books by the same author & illustrator - "Leo the Late Bloomer" and "Milton the Early Riser" - both wonderful stories as well for kids, and then "Three Friends" which is a story that incorporates Herman, Leo & Milton all in one story together! I would've flipped out as a kid if I had known these books also exist. Enjoy!!

This is a beautifully-illustrated, joyful story that not only my daughter has enjoyed for the past few years, but was also one of my absolute childhood favorites! This is a classic that deserves to be shared among the generations!

Such a sweet, good-hearted story. I read this to my little brother countless times when he was little, and enjoyed it just as much when I read it again recently after purchasing for the next generation. Herman is a kind-hearted little octopus who helps everyone he meets-- a great role model for children to think about. Colorful, sweet, interesting and engaging illustrations are fun for adults and kids.

The ache of nostalgia...

There are those who love Nabokov, and those who haven't figured him out yet. Pnin is a good "Starter Book" for most people: the writing is not yet too convoluted, nor are there too many layers of meaning (seemingly) to confuse the timid. It seems such a simple tale: a slightly clumsy professor, who is a bit of a fool with such a funny accent. So quaint. So cute.

Good readers realize that Nabokov has squirreled away (so to speak) some of his most potent messages: Pnin is possibly his most noble and kind soul in his canon (which is to say a Big Bertha): Pnin is a profound scholar, a man of enormous passion and commitment, a perfect father to his ex-wife's son to another man, still devoted to her despite her crassness, really a mensch. And hovering over and around this tale the Emigre milieu in the mid 20th Century is encapsulated and preserved as refulgently as the White Russian world of Berlin was captured in "The Gift".

I read this dreadful paperback edition when I was a child the age of Victor in the book when he gave Pnin the glass bowl: the ridiculous image of the young coeds and the silly depiction of Pnin are horribly, terribly nostalgic to me now... I would have anything to have it back!

Complete, insightful and inspiring

Mr. Hadden is right on in his review. As a 76 year old Anglican and lifetime user of the 1928 BCP, the Commentary has been invaluable aid to understanding and more fully appreciating the meaning of everything along with historical context. I'm only sorry I did not own a copy when I was confirmed at 15.

Although scholarly in approach, it is easy to read and understand. On the left side, a page from the Prayer Book is reproduced and on the facing page each prayer, psalm, exhortation, rubric, etc. on that page is examined and explained in ordinary English. Nothing is omitted except the Psalter. Even the title page, lectionary and tables are covered.

I highly recommend this Al- Mawrid Trilingual Dictionary which was published recently with many helpful features.

“Al-Mawrid Al thoulathi” trilingual dictionary shows clearly the way Arabic words pronunciations since it contains the Romanization or the transliteration.

“Al-Mawrid Al thoulathi” trilingual dictionary is not just an Arabic-English-French dictionary as most readers are using it as three dictionaries in one such as: Arabic- Arabic and Arabic – English and Arabic French.

It is not necessary to need the French language in order to buy it, as you can still use the Arabic and English Columns as most of our readers do.

About the Author

Jerry H. Bentley is professor of history at the University of Hawai`i and editor of the Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research has concentrated on global history and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996) discusses the historiography of world history. His current interests include processes of cross-cultural interaction and cultural exchanges in modern times.

Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught courses on world history for the last 19 years and is currently the director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. For several years, he also served as the book review editor of the 'Journal of World History'. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of 'Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy (1990)'. He is at present working on a study that explores uncharted aspects of German society, especially the cultural manifestations of humor and satire in the Nazi era. His other current research project focuses on the application of complexity theory to a comparative study of societies and their internal dynamics.

Heather Streets Salter is Associate Professor of History at Washington State University, where she teaches World History at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She received her Ph.D. in the History of the British Empire at Duke University in 1998. She is director of the WSU History department's World History Ph.D. program, and director of Washington State University's undergraduate World Civilizations program. She served as an area editor for the Oxford Encyclopedia of the Modern World, published in 2008 by Oxford University Press. Recent publications include Martial Races: The Military, Race, and Masculinity in British Imperial Culture, 1857-1914, published in 2004 by Manchester University Press. Her forthcoming book (co-authored with Trevor Getz), Imperialism in the Modern World, will be published by Pearson in 2010.

Great Crime Entertainment

This is the third Eric Beetner book I've read this year and for the third time in a row, he delivers thrilling, pulpy, criminal entertainment. Rumrunners, which so far might actually be his most popular book, follows the McGraw family, who for generations have been working as talented wheelmen for the Stanley's, an Iowa crime family. Tucker McGraw has been set on ending this outlaw legacy by going to college and becoming an insurance salesman. But when his father Webb goes missing with the Stanley's latest package, the Stanley's put the debt on him. So Tucker must reluctantly get involved in the family business, and with the help of his OG grandfather Calvin, find out the truth about Webb's disappearance, and get out from under the thumb of the Stanley's.

Like in Dig Two Graves and Run For the Money, in this one, Beetner once again shows a knack for creating engaging criminal characters. Calvin McGraw stole the show here as the 84-year-old whose fondness for beer is only eclipsed by his love for American muscle cars, and who is growing tired of his retirement and jumps at a chance for reliving his glory days outrunning the Feds on the open road. Also, seeing the McGraw side of straight-man Tucker gradually emerge from within as he begins to embrace the outlaw life was fun to see as well. And Beetner has a talent for crafting great action scenes, with the fist-fights and car chases properly standing out the way they should in a book like this. And when you include Beetner's trademark wit and humor, you won't be disappointed with this classic crime thriller.

This is my first experience with Beetner. He's got some obvious writing talent, but the plot was thin. His style vascillated between comic and noir, falling short of mastering either.
