Excellent writeup on the FDA

I recently have had the pleasure to interview Patrick Stone on my Clinical Trials Guru webshow, and we discussed this book, which eventually led me to actually read the book. As someone who has been in the clinical trials industry for about 10 years, I was always fascinated by the FDA and its inner workings. This book is really easy to read, and non-industry folks who are also interested in the FDA in general, will probably find its story flow non intimidating. A must read for anyone who ever wanted to know more about how the FDA works from both the Food as well as the Drug component.

This is a very easy to read book for Qt beginners who knows C++

This is a very easy to read book for Qt beginners who knows C++. I strongly recommend this book to those who wants to learn basic understanding of QT without a lot of time (with some previous programming experiences).

I was looking for a book that can teach me write Qt in python (using pySide) in relatively short amount of time (less than 10 hours). I ordered 3 books on Amazon at one time, hoping that at least one of them was good...

The other two are:
- PySide GUI Application Development: This book is basically a junk. Despite the author's poor English writing skills(just as bad as my... now you have an idea), the book is way too short. If you jump the introduction part(i.e. how to install it, what is QT, etc. ) and the part the author copied and pasted from PySide Reference page, there are not much original stuff left.

- Rapid GUI Programming with Python and Qt: If you have more time and want to have a very good understanding of QT in python, just buy this one... It uses PyQt though.

No better than the Qt tutorial

Don't waste your money. This book would be helpful in getting you started using Qt, but the examples and coverage are no better or more complete than the tutorial included with the qt package. This book introduces basic Qt tools, but doesn't give any suggestions for how to use them in actual applications. Even the simple example applications at the trolltech website are more practical than the examples in this book.

Best Introductory book available on Qt

This is definitely the best introductory book available at present on Qt.
I must admit that, in general, I don't like the "Teach Yourself.." series from Sams, as I generally find that despite the good ansatz of "teach by doing" that the books tend to be 'thrown together' in too much of a hurry. Often they end up being little more than a collection of "click here, type this, and now you understand what happened" lectures, that lack good descriptions and explanations of why the examples work, and how one could change them to suit one's needs.
However there is a distinctive lack of Qt books on the market as of this writing: 3 in English: Solin (this book), Dalheimer (pub: O'Reilly edition 1) , and Ward (pub: Hewlett Packard) 1 in German: Leaner (pub: Addison Wesley, edition 2.. a thorough and helpful book too incidentally), and 1 in Japanese, with the "Official Qt Documentation" soon to be published. So I bought the book, albeit it with reservation, and started reading with scepticism.I was very pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong in this case.
The book is extremely well written with great attention to detail. The author is careful to cover lots of ground at a sufficient (but not pedantically nity gritty) level, with a self-contained and simple example for each of the many topics/Qt classes covered, making this an ideal introduction to and preparation for the (extensive and coherent) online Qt documentation. All other Qt books presently available have the serious failing that they do not have enough examples to illustrate the discussions in the book. Dalheimer has several versions of a single example and otherwise only code snippets (this is by the way the next best book in my opinion), and Ward has no complete examples worth mentioning (this book is highly overpriced, and not worth buying in my opinion. Borrow it from a library perhaps. It has a slightly outdated version of Qt (2.1) on an accompanying Cd which is something the other books don't have though.. perhaps a positive consideration for those with slow internet connections).
The author's email address is also printed in the book, and he was kind enough to answer promptly and send me the example source code, when I wrote to him. (Something the publisher's didn't...another black mark for Sams). The book also contains very helpful information on installing/setting up Qt , and even includes a chapter overviewing object orientated programming (Qt uses C++ as opposed to C. If you're completely new to C++ or object orientated concepts you should probably read an introductory book (Lafore's and Deitel's excellent works spring to mind) on that before trying to do any serious programming with Qt).
All in all this book is excellent and well worth buying. The only possible room for improvement/change in future editions would be the possible inclusion of a Cd with the example code and a current version of Qt, and sections covering the newer topics such Qt Designer and database programming (intended for inclusion in Qt 3.0), and the proposed Visual C++ integration Wizard (currently (version 2.2.4) implemented as a the seperately compilable qmsdev.dll ).

this book has so many good basic techniques and tips

No one book is a complete resource, you always have to add books to get a more complete picture. However, this book has so many good basic techniques and tips, it could stand alone. Very good resource for the beginner and experienced in making sculptures.

Another Great Lark Pottery Book

I am a retired school teacher and potter. I throw (make pots on the wheel) and handbuild. My work can be seen at davethepotter.ca

No doubt because pots often suggests a face, human faces have a long tradition in pottery/sculpture. Whether ugly faces pots and mugs of the American south, or the Martin Brothers, English potters 1870's - 1900's who are famous for the Walley Birds and face jugs the adding or painting of faces onto pots goes back at least 5000 years. This book will help ensure that tradition continues.

Chapter one starts with a brief discussion of the tools and materials needed. Really a minimum of tools and equipment are required, although you will need access to a kiln. Mr. Irvine uses earthenware fired to cone 04. This is clay is very common among sculptors but the techniques are just as useful to potters firing to stoneware temperatures. The rest of the chapter deals with the anatomy of the head, including skull and musculature.

Chapter two is a discussion of building techniques. This book isn't really for beginner potters - some, but not all basic clay techniques are shown and briefly discussed. I'd think beginners, to be successful would find it useful to take a basic pottery handbuilding course at your local community college or potter's guild first before attempting to create these faces. Experienced potter will have little difficulty as they will be familiar with all the techniques used to make the head.

Mr. Irvine uses slab construction as opposed to solid construction or the use of an armature. Only the slab technique is described in detail, and the armature technique is not the standard approach as described in most sculpture books. With slab construction the face is shaped by pushing out from the inside and pushing in on the outside. This is a technique I've used on thrown and handbuilt vases and pots. It is a technique I learnt from Arthur Gonzales in The Figure in Clay, Lark 2005.

After discussing the overall technique, in chapter three we have a more detailed look at the sculpting of the facial features -eye, nose, ear, mouth and chin. This is well done and is sufficiently detailed to create a basic head.

Mr Irvine thinks hair is the hardest part (p62) of sculpturing the head and you will have to look elsewhere for a detail discussion on hair. While there is little about hair there is nothing on facial hair. Maybe not a major concern for you but for someone who has had a beard for 45 years it is a point to be noted. While I haven't made a head yet using the book there is one change I would already make to the basic technique. If I was going to add hair I'd make the head slightly over size so I could push out and shape the hairline and volumes of the hair. This avoids adding large amounts of clay to the top of the head which would have be removed (hollowed out) before drying. I'd experiment and maybe start with a cylinder an inch taller than suggested.

Chapter four covers six expressions: happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, disgust. Each expression is demonstrated and covers changes to the muscles, eyes and eyebrows, mouth, etc. This is all very well done and maybe the most useful part of the book and I'm sure you will refer back to this section often.

The same cannot be said for the section on aging. There is a very brief discussion of aging of the face but no demonstration by author of an older face - there are a few 'old' heads in the gallery.

The final chapter deals with the basic drying and firing techniques. Drying a face constructed using the slab technique is really no different than drying a thick vase and will not present a problem for the average potter. The discussion on glazes is very brief and unlike many pottery books there are no recipes for glazes.

This brings me to the biggest weakness of the book. Mr irvine includes the same male and female white models throughout the book. He doesn't address the child's head, ethnic or age differences. While this might be excusable in a book for potters just starting to try their hand at sculpture I find it harder to understand the absence of female faces. All sculptures demonstrations are male, In fact the majority of sculptures throughout the book are male. Mr. Irvine's male faces are wonderful so it cannot be any lack of ability to create a female face. The book would of been even more useful if Mr. Irvine had alternated between male and female faces, oh well!

Still in spite of this weakness I think this is another great Lark pottery book which deserves a place in any potter's library who is interested in handbuilding. I know I'm going to get a lot of use out of it. Definitely recommend!

Wish I'd bought it sooner!

I so wish I'd thought to look for this before I began my first bust. It would have saved me a whole lot of time, and increased the chance that the finished piece will dry evenly enough to remain free of cracks before it goes into the kiln. Fingers crossed! Because I tend towards realism (and being a born perfectionist) it took a lot of time to work and re-work the face until it became real enough, and with the subtle smile that I was hoping to achieve.
This book has excellent photos of not only the work in clay but also of models who offer a good range of expressions for every mood. It's also full of inspiring pieces from a range of different artists.
The techniques are clearly laid out, step by step, and shown in good detail.
The only thing that could have improved this for me would be to see some details of neck and shoulders. My figure is of a woman with her eyes half closed, face tilted upwards and slightly to the side. As is almost always the case, the neck and shoulders are the base of a bust, and I was hoping to see some examples of protrusions of the spinal cord, and the scapulas to help to perfect my piece. It's very hard to find photos that help with something like this.
Overall though, I highly recommend this book. Love it!

Coming of Age Meets Middle Age

Unlike other reviews, I don't really know the scoop on her relationship with Jude Law. Nor did I buy the book for that, I really bought it becuase she was a bit of an It girl for the late 80's-90's with her relationship with Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) and in Coppola's Dracula. The book is good and full of little nuggets about other celebs (Kate Moss, Gavin Rossdale,Carl Barat from the Libertines) but it's not very reflective. She tells the story of her hippie/artist parents (with 9+ step-siblings), being on her own since 16 and it's easy to see how her upbringing has played a role in her adult relationships. However, she rarely attributes insight or emotion or explains her behaviour. It would be a more interesting book if she did. It's a quick read and enjoyable and made me like her (rather than envy her).

A sad but honest story

My introduction to Sadie Frost was Bram Stoker's Dracula in November 1992. Upon seeing the movie I was instantly smitten with her beauty in the role of the doomed Lucy Westenra. I bought the Making Of book, the expensive Criterion laserdisc, soundtrack, novels, etc. I even had a poster of Sadie in her vamped out form on my bedroom wall. I've been a fan of hers ever since. My fave roles of hers are Dracula (hard to watch the film now without cringing at the awful dialogue and subpar performances by Keanu and Winona. Only the British actors are good.), The Cisco Kid, and Pyromaniac's Love Story (got the poster too). Up until this book's publication, I knew very little about Sadie's early life. And, now that I've read her autobiography, I can't help but feel sorry for her. Such a terrible childhood. I know exactly what it's like to have a chronically angry father. Mine was pretty bad too. It's amazing to read Sadie still found the ability to still love such a monster after witnessing such anger and abuse to her family. I also had no idea she had a bad lung. And her manic depression? I know what that's like too. I've struggled with it all my life. I hope and pray I don't turn into my father either.

Yes, I quite enjoyed this autobiography. I read a lot of celebrity bios, but this one seemed one of the more honest. Letting everything out on the line can be truly painful, but also very therapeutic at the same time. My only complaint would be: I wish she wrote more about her various films. Barely mentions them at all. Only the pivotal ones that helped her breakthrough. I like the stuff on how she got the Dracula role, especially the "shaving" bit. Hilarious.

As a movie geek, I enjoyed this book. Not a masterpiece, but I certainly found it enlightening. You think you know everything about someone from all the headlines, but that's not always true. How little I knew about this one.

"Nighty night. Sleep tight. Don't let the bedbugs bite."

From one author (I wrote the forthcoming LA noir novel MACGUFFIN) to another (Sadie Frost)... chin up, stand tall, keep moving forward, and never look back.

"When things are at their darkest, pal, it's a brave man who can kick back and party."

After reading her book I feel like I have a special relationship with her

I'm a big Jude Law fan and always wanted to know more about his former wife, who I always admired and cherished. After reading her book I feel like I have a special relationship with her, like I know her well. She is an amazing woman who suffered far too much and this books just shows how great she is. Also a good book to read if you deal with depression, as Sadie explains how her mental illness impacted her life. Good read!
