About the Author

Craig Groves is the Executive Director for the Science for Nature and People Partnership (SNAP, www.snap.is), a collaboration of The Nature Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also serves as the Series Editor for IUCN’s World Commission on Protected Areas Best Practice Guidelines. In his 30-year career in nature conservation, Craig has worked as a conservation scientist and planner for TNC, WCS, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. He has written a previous book on conservation planning (Drafting a Conservation Blueprint, Island Press 2003) as well as numerous articles on conservation planning and on the ecology of at-risk species in the Rocky Mountains.

Edward Game is a Senior Scientist with The Nature Conservancy. He has worked on conservation plans in over 15 countries and published more than 30 papers on aspects of conservation decision making. He is author of the manual for the world’s most widely used conservation planning software, Marxan, and was the recipient of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation’s inaugural prize for innovative concepts to conserve the reef in the face of climate change. Eddie is currently the Associate Editor of Conservation Letters and serves on the editorial board of Conservation Biology and the Board of Governors of the Society for Conservation Biology.

Comprehensive and accessible overview of the field of conservation planning

This new book is a great overview of the state-of-the-art of conservation planning. The authors have been working in this area for decades (for example see the 2003 book Drafting a Conservation Blueprint). The new book builds on that earlier work and adds treatment of all the developments that has occurred in the last decade, including topics such as addressing climate change in planning. The book is suitable for a range of readers, from a graduate course to agency and NGO staff directly engaged in planning. Highly recommended if your work includes conservation planning or even if you are just interested in the topic.

"This Kind of War:" the story of the Korean War from the individual soldier's perspective.

Before this year, I knew very little about the Korean War. Now I know a lot more about what is called “the forgotten war,” thanks to two books on the subject that I’ve read over the last two months. Earlier this week, I finished “This Kind of War: The Classic Military History of the Korean War” by T.R. Fehrenbach.

The story Fehrenbach tells his story primarily through the perspective of the individual soldiers who fought on the front lines of the war. He describes the living hell of some of the great battles of the war, including Seoul, Osan, Inchon, Imjin River, Chosin (Changjin) Reservoir, Bloody and Heartbreak Ridges, Pork Chop Hill, and others.

Fehrenbach wrote “This Kind of War” about ten years after he served in Korea as an Army officer. Although doesn’t mention his Korean War experiences anywhere in his book, Fehrenbach’s disillusionment with how the war was fought at all levels fairly drips from each page. His main criticism is that the United States was very much unprepared to fight a major land war in Asia – or anywhere else, for that matter. The Truman Administration had spent the five years after the end of World War II gutting defense budgets, reducing military personnel levels, and depriving the armed forces of the essential equipment they needed in order to win. Soldiers – especially those stationed in Japan, the ones who would end up being sent to Korea – had lost their fighting edge due to inadequate training and soft living.

Fehrenbach brings to life many of the most famous historical events of the war, including President Harry Truman’s firing of General Douglas MacArthur, the death of General Walton Walker in a motor vehicle accident, and – most interestingly – the plight of prisoners of war (POWs) on both sides. Relying on interviews with American POWs who survived captivity, Fehrenbach paints a devastating picture of the sub-human conditions these soldiers were forced to endure. The author also gives a detailed account of the uprising in the United Nations POW camp on Koje-do Island, and how that rebellion by North Korean and Chinese prisoners was suppressed.

“This Kind of War” is an excellent account of the Korean War. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I learned a great deal from it. Highly recommended.

The Classical Narrative of the Korean War

The classic narrative of the Korean by a combat veteran. Fehrenbach's discussion of the lack of military preparedness, diplomatic bumbling, and for the most part, the bedrock heroism of the American and UN troops engaged has lessons for us today. He also gives credit to the ROK army for its major role in the war and the heroism of its troops. Korea marked a new kind of war that America did not adjust to very well. It set a pattern for the time of limited wars we have subsequently fought. We have yet to fully recognize these wars are different. They require different definitions of winning and national leaders who can effectively communicate their importance to the American public. Without such national leadership the national will will not support these wars. This Kind of War is as relevant today as it was when first published in the early 1960s. It is a must read for anyone interested in understanding the Korean War from American military, political and diplomatic perspectives.

Lessons learned and those not learned

I have not read it in many years. I bought this copy to replace one I gifted to a friend. It is a good read for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of USA and United Nations involvement in world affairs. It also provides some insight into the disastrous consequences for the those who serve their country. Throwing troops in summer uniform into lethal winder conditions, with inadequate weapons and supplies is inexcusable. As a veteran of the Vietnam conflict I am happy to say that although we did not learn all the lessons of Korea, we did, at least, take much better care of our troops.

The novel of remembrance--most often of love lost--is one of the most common of pre-Stonewall gay male literary themes. While it was enthusiastically replaced by the ever-popular theme of "come out and have sex," it has not completely passed into oblivion. William Corlett's enchanting and elucidating Now and Then has a decidedly pre-Stonewall feel to it, a tone of melancholia and nostalgia both surprising and comforting. Christopher Metcalf is a book editor at midlife who, upon returning home for his father's funeral, is faced with the painful memory of a love he lost at the age of 15 when he was betrayed by an older schoolmate whom he adored. Christopher's memories and his slow recognition of how he has squandered his emotional life over the years are moving, even startling. Corlett's language has a touch of classical elegance to it, yet resonates with contemporary idiom and briskness. The most astonishing aspect of Now and Then, however, is its refusal to become sentimental or present tough emotions in an easy or baleful manner. In this, it transforms a pre-Stonewall theme into a decidedly post-Stonewall novel. --Michael Bronski

I couldn't put this book down and yet I never wanted it to end. Although it is a recent novel, it has the same depth of passion and tragedy of a Thomas Hardy novel. A real gem!

Tucket Books 1-5 (Tucket's Travels)

As a teacher, I have found that these books are great for kids in many different grades, and reading levels. I have students in the 6th grade that love these books, and I also have struggling readers in the 10th grade that really like the Tucket series. These books are full of exciting adventures that most kids really enjoy!

Surprisingly touching bond between a boy and his hero

Generally I am not a fan of Westerns, but I absolutely loved Tucket's Travels. Though I enjoyed the adventure and historical aspects, I was most touched by the unusual and noble bond between Mr. Grimes, the one-armed mountain man, and Mr. Tucket. One doesn't come across this special kind of friendship often in today's literature. I was reminded of the old classic, Shane. I am pleased that in this day and age there are still people writing about not only that theme, but also of individuality and the confidence that is gained when one is competent. What an excellent model to hold up for young people today. Parents can definitely feel good about letting their children read this book.

My teacher Mrs.Theodore reads to us every day after lunch.These days she has been reading to us the Tucket books.We are now almost finished with the last book.When our teacher reads every time we beg her to read more.We can listen to our teacher read the Tucket books all year long.But there aren't enough books for that.The Tucket books are full of adventure.And I bet a lot of people agree with me when I say I wish there were more Tucket books.Gary Paulsen is now one of my favorite authors.Who also inspired me to read.I now end this review saying I love the Tucket books.

An excellent guide to Russian-style programming, very well thought-out.

If you're familiar with Takano's theories or programming at all, you know he's a fan of Russian style programming, and some of his stuff can be a bit "high-brow", meaning lots of complicated programs, prescribed volumes and intensities, etc.

The book starts with a basic review of biology, chemistry, adaptation to training, etc. Being a biology/chemistry geek, much of this wasn't particularly new or interesting to me, but I think it's a good review and probably needs included in the book. If these ideas are new to you, you will probably find it quite helpful, as it does establish a theoretical basis for much of the programming to follow.

Mr. Takano is a big believer in Russian programming, specifically Medvedyev. He continues to categorize lifters by Class III, Class II, Class I, Candidate for Master, etc... He includes training rational and sample programming for each class of trainee. This is far more detailed than anything posted on his website.

For example, in Class III training, he covers the theory behind the training, recommend exercises, volume and intensity, long-term planning, etc. He also provides a sample 4-week loading program and 4-week pre-competition program. I found this training to very closely follow the Medvedyev programming. But if you've ever read the Medvedyev stuff, you know it can sometimes read like stereo instructions. It is not well organized. Mr. Takano is very good at taking this information and laying it out in understandable and applicable ideas and programs.

After going through each class of lifter specifically, Mr. Takano ends the book with discussion of restoratives, diet, and some coaching guidance and tips. The discussion on restoratives focuses on non-pharmacological therapies like massage, jacuzzi, contrast showers, etc. I found this section helpful, but would have preferred a more evidence-based discussion. For example, why exactly is a pine needle bath going to help me? Has this been studied, or am I just going to smell like pine all day and still be sore?

Overall, I'd say it's an excellent book. While I don't say one method of programming is absolutely superior over another, I tend to think the Russian/Chinese method of programming has produced a greater number of champions in the modern drug-tested era. And from what I have seen, there also does seem to be a reduced incidence of major injury with Russian programming. Regardless, the book is quite informative, and I would recommend it if you're at all interested in weightlifting programming.

The Book Is Absolutely Essential!

I just finished Bob Takano's stellar book, Weightlifting Programming: A Winning Coach's Guide. Coach Takano is essentially a demi-god, having been inducted into the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame as well as being a USAW Senior International Coach. He served as head coach for the international team for many years and produced many quality weightlifters for the USA. When Greg Everett released that he was publishing this book for Coach Takano, I naturally jumped at the opportunity to learn and pre-ordered his book on the pre-release date (I know ... I'm a nerd).

One of my weakest points as an ever-learning coach is the concept of programming. With so many philosophies to choose from, it can be easy to get lost and feel overwhelmed. This book did a phenomenal job at not only explaining an approach to programming, but Coach Takano did a wonderful job at explaining why you choose certain exercises during certain phases of a weightlifter's career. The ease in which he explains the concept of Long Term Athletic Development is incredible. In my pursuit of higher learning, I never encountered someone that was able to break it down into such easy terms. His integration of mathematics, statistics, biology, kinesiology, exercise science, and physics of how they're used in a coach's pursuit of the perfect program for his individual lifters is flawless. There was never a time where I had to re-read a sentence because I couldn't understand the material presented - that only happened because I actually wanted to out of pure fascination and satisfaction. Lastly, his writing style is refreshing. You can tell he is a learned, 40-year biology teacher. It makes me wish I had someone like that in high school or college when I was learning such a key subject.

This book should really be on any person's list to read if you are in strength and conditioning, be it the garage warrior or an experienced coach. Your desire to continue learning and developing yourself should NEVER end, regardless of experience. There are key points that those within the aforementioned range of experience can benefit from. He is not shy at pointing out fundamental flaws in the US' athletic development system and presenting his theory as to why we continue to have an issue with steroids and performance enhancers. His statistics demonstrate just how important quality repetitions are. Regardless if your athlete is a weightlifter or a wrestler, the "perfect practice makes perfect" principle exudes from this well-written book and can be applied to any part of your life. You can see a weightlifter's average intensity remain constant over time, but his volume increases significantly through each stage, therefore making me come to the conclusion that it is absolutely critical to increase the amount of perfect repetitions as the athlete continues to reach top-end strength levels and develops into a high-level athlete. Without it, the athlete won't be able to apply those new strength gains in whatever sport he/she plays, which essentially makes that athlete strong for no good reason. It also compounds the notion that to be good at one movement, you have to drill it perfectly 10,000 times and not necessarily at maximum intensity - the very same theory I heard when I was a wrestler. Pick up this book today!

A vague and reworded discussion on the Soviet style of training.

Pros:
-Takano talks about GPP (General physical preparation) of youth and junior lifters
- Introduces the classifications system used by the Soviets to group lifters according to their snatch and clean and jerk totals
- Suggestions on exercise selection and and frequency based on this class system
- Has charts to match height and gender to weight classes
- Has an interesting recap on the history of Weightlifting in the past hundred years until recently.

Cons:
- Lacks mention of concurrent training (combination of aerobic and anaerobic activities in training)
- Introduces the concept of General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) but fails to explain how it applies to weightlifting with examples, and therefore, doesn't emphasize it's importance as a concept in training, programming, and periodization.
- Fails to mention the three basic energy systems (Phosphagen, Glycolytic, and Oxidative) that control where we get our energy to perform exercises.
- No mention of the neuromuscular system (Motor unit + Muscle unit) and how it deals with resistance training or how resistance training can alter the body physiologically
- Lack of discussion on "specificity" on both exercise selection and energy systems
- No mention of stress/ recovery/ adaptation as an important concept that ALL coaches must know to create an efficient program.

Summary:
An interesting read but by far NOT A COMPLETE book on programming. This book is essentially the Sparknotes of books translated by Andrew Charniga on Soviet style training manuals. This book is more of a template with some minor explantation of what ins and outs of how to use it, but still leaves me asking many questions on "Why this", "Why that", "What about this"?

Would I recommend this book?
I would. I had the PDF and bought the book because I love weightlifting and I am open minded to all styles and training methods to the competitive weightlifter. However, This should not be your last programming book for weightlifting or training, as there are a lot of very important training concepts not discussed in Takano's book.

About the Author

George Lange has been taking photographs all his life. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, he began his career working for Annie Leibovitz and Duane Michals, and went on to shoot for many major magazines, national newspapers, entertainment studios, and corporations. Today he is best known for his commercial still and motion work.

Scott Mowbray, now the editor of Cooking Light, is a serious amateur photographer and longtime Time Inc. editor. He lives in Birmingham, Alabama, and Louisville, Colorado.

An Unforgettable Book

This book is great. Lange demonstrates his experience and talent as a photographer with beautiful photographs. The point of the book is to give you tips "for taking the best pictures of your life" and it does just that. It doesn't really focus on the technical aspects about photography which makes it different from other photo books and is something I enjoyed. This book is about telling a story with your photographs and capturing those special moments that are constantly disappearing. Lange encourages readers to always keep shooting and look for the in-between moments that make a picture truly memorable. The design of the book is simple, clean, and beautiful and is easy to just flip through or read cover-to-cover. I recommend this book to any photographer looking to capture simple moments of life with a new perspective.

Stunning book as much about human connections as it is photography

I am blown away by George Lange's new book. What's here for me is a wonderful deep dive into human interaction, within the frame of a book about photography. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of wonderful tips and thoughts on the art of photography itself, but I'm not a photographer (in any sense of the word), and I LOVED not only the photos but the wonderful mirror on how we live, what we capture, how we think about "beauty." George is an amazingly passionate, authentic guy...and viewing the world through his eyes (which I guess he often closes) or at least his heart and lens...is an extraordinary romp.

Can't say enough about it. Loved it.

My Browns Fan Wife Loved It

My Cleveland sports-loving-wife loved this book. She plans to make photo copies of it to pass out at their family reunion so the kids can color in the sadness that is Cleveland Sports. It's pretty funny and well written/drawn. I highly recommend this to any self-depreciating Cleveland Sports fan. I'll be rooting for her Cavs this spring but we all know it'll just end in sadness. Such is the life of a Cleveland Sports fan. Sigh.

Accomplished exactly what I hoped it would. Put a huge smile on my brother in law's face Christmas morning. Lots of neat sports histort too. Not just a coloring book.
