These are the books you're looking for

William Shakespeare’s Star Wars – The Empire Striketh Back by Ian Doescher is the sequel to William Shakespeare’s Star Wars, a retelling of George Lucas’s space saga in the style of William Shakespeare. I would strongly recommend picking this up as an audiobook rather than ebook or hard copy – Random House Audio’s production is top notch with an excellent cast. It is far more like a radio play than an audiobook and the excellent cast does a wonderful job of telling the story.

What I liked

The source material. The original Star Wars trilogy is a darn good story. It contains a lot of strong themes which would have been as relevant in Shakespeare’s time as today: love, betrayal, youthful impetuousness, struggle against tyranny. Doescher therefore has a strong base on which to base his adaptation. It also isn’t too jarring, for example, when Han rails against Lando’s betrayal in Shakespearean language as it is a theme and emotion found in many of Shakespeare’s works.

Yoda. On my first listen through I was a little disappointed that Yoda didn’t sound too different from the other characters. In the movies, he has a unique speech pattern and I was hoping that this would be reflected in Empire Striketh Back. It was only on reading Doescher’s commentary that I realised Yoda was speaking in haiku! Darn I wished I’d picked that up first time. This is intended to reflect Yoda’s role as Luke’s master – or sensei – in the mystical force giving an eastern feel to it. Brilliant. Appropriate and brilliant.

The production. Random House Audio has gone full out to make this a radio play rather than an audiobook. We have a strong cast, sound effects (including the iconic swish of the lightsabres) as well as snippets of John Williams’ memorable soundtrack. It all combines to make it a wonderful listen.

Doescher’s Notes and Commentary. I the ebook edition I also possess, Doescher adds some commentary explaining some of the creative decisions he made while writing Empire. This, combined with the teachers notes provides a fascinating new insight into the book.

What I didn’t like

There was nothing, I tell you, nothing i disliked about The Empire Striketh Back. I already have The Jedi Doth Return on pre-order. As the trailer says “these are the books you have been looking for.”

Trust your instincts, there are no Jedi mind tricks here, only great reading!

I am forgoing my usual short synopsis of the stories I review because in this case I think I am justified with assuming that most people already know a little something about the original Star Wars trilogy.

I’ve loved Star Wars since I saw the first film in 1977. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to review these books. However, I will admit to being a bit nervous about the “Shakespearean” component. Honestly, I admire the Bard and absolutely love Shakespearean theater, but given the choice it is not the first (or even second) book I would pull from a shelf to read. If you have similar fears, let me put them to rest: Ian Doescher’s triple combination of the beloved bard, George Lucas’ classic Star Wars saga, and a few of the author’s own secret ingredients creates one of the most enchanting and delightful series imaginable. This well-loved story written in Shakespearean style made the material fresh and exciting.

Pay special attention to the asides and soliloquies: they can be funny, poignant or sad but each gives a unique insight into character personality or motivations. I really love Doescher’s books the best when he shares our cherished character’s innermost thoughts. For instance, how does C-3PO really feel about R2-D2, or vice-versa? Haven’t we all wondered what Obi Wan was really thinking when he told Luke his father was killed by Darth Vader? Speaking of Vader, what are the thoughts behind that monstrous mask? Are Stormtroopers people with ideas and hopes, or just faceless soldiers? How did Luke and Leia feel when they found out they were siblings after their infamous kiss? Is the Emperor all bad? Doescher’s narrative resolves these mysteries and more.

I also want to take a moment to gush about the illustrations in all three volumes, drawn by the talented Nicholas Delort. They help readers to visualize their favorite characters in frilly ruffs and doublets and are absolutely brilliant.

Forget the nunnery and get thee to a bookstore (or Amazon) to pick up all three of these delightful tomes. Each one is a “must read,” so whether you are spending your summer in the sands (Tatooine), stuck at work (Death Star) or are on some exotic jungle adventure (Endor), you need to trust your instincts because there are no Jedi mind tricks here, only great reading!

There really isn't anything that I could say that would influence a decision on purchasing this book. it's Star Wars, but written like Shakespeare! You literally cannot get anything better than that!

Obviously it would help if you have seen the movies before purchasing these books just so you have some baseline on what it originally was, but this is a great read and I am enjoying it immensely. Can't wait for the 3rd book to be released!

Overall: Would strongly recommend to a Star Wars fan looking for a laugh that has a slight appreciation for Shakespearean theater.

Not about critical thinking.

To be fair, we only got through chapter eight in my summer semester and the first two chapters were good and were about critical thinking. But then the author goes off into all this detail about all these obscure things like Venn diagrams, and deductive and inductive arguments where you turn a regular sentence into something they might've used in the thirteenth century, and got so far from thinking it was a joke. It was more an exercise in screwing around with sentence structure than any form of thinking. I'm sixty years old and not uneducated. But I have never used any of these things nor have any of the other people in class, and other than patience, I learned almost nothing having to do with critical thinking.
The layout and pictures were good though.

Good book

This is a good book. I am not an expert yet have read various articles on the subject and want to provide some what of a definition. It is a little known and sometimes disbelieved process many US citizens report happening to them. "Gang Stalking" is a non technical activity and can be done with bumper surveillance and groups of individuals ready at any time to harass the individual. It is taken from actions used by the East German Stasis and can even be traced back to Nazi behavior. They want you to now they are there yet they don't and won't want you know why or who they actually are. They will use stimuli to make you aware of them. It could be a word, action or anything you associate with them. To society you are often mis labeled. This is used to get local support for their activities. Justification comes from local citizens who are often given false information and are made to believe they are helping with a bad person or something like national security. Often used are gag orders so that thsse involved legally can say nothing. They become judge, jury and in some case possibly executioner. Many Targeted Individuals (TI) try suicide as a way to deal with it. Also mentioned was electronic weapons. Human hearing operates at transmissions above 20 hz. many of the weapons can't be heard or seen and use low frequencies. No more space to write. United you stand and divided you lose. TIs stay together and never give up and never give in. Your day in court may be sooner than you think.

I recommend people to read this book and judge for themselves

This book studies how informants are used to destroy lives. Gang stalking is the use of psychological warfare techniques in the home front. In fact it is not new. Read also 1996 by Gloria Naylor. I recommend people to read this book and judge for themselves. I liked the quick delivery and excellent service.

Atty. Prag writes an excellent analysis of the latest crime phenomenon of gangstalking. She discusses her family's trials and tribulations with this evil. This is good for anyone being down on themselves in dealing with this crime. As gangstalking can make one feel depressed with their situation. She makes logical analyses and doesn't let the sufferer feel sorry for themselves but yet gives an enlightening pep talk.

Best Used as a Teaching Manual Rather Than a Reference Book

The price of Sonar Home Studio 7XL has dropped so dramatically that it has become the PC equivalent of Apple's Garageband. The Sonar program is far more feature rich but is not as intuitive as Garageband. This book solves the problem for Sonar.

If you follow the instructions in the book you will learn how to create loop based music, how to record real instruments, how to use virtual instruments, how to use synthesizers, how to add effects, and finally how to mix and master a recording. The written instructions are very easy to follow and the there are many illustrations to supplement the teaching materials.

Where Sonar parts company with Garageband is in the use of synthesizers. Sonar's parent company is Cakewalk and Cakewalk is known for its phenomenal synthesizers. To operate these synthesizers you need to understand midi (musical instrument digital interface) and this book covers the topic in a very non-threatening way.

It took me 3 months to finish the book from cover to cover and I am able to create the exact sound I want. My failings as an instrumentalist and vocalist can be edited.

Sonar Home Studio is a relatively old program that works on notepad computers with little memory or hard drive storage. Sonar has moved on with far more sophisticated software which works best on System 7 and 64 bit operating platform. Having finished the instructions in this book you will have the pleasant choice of sticking with a very adequate recording program or taking on the challenge of working with the latest Sonar software which incorporates much of what is in version 7 but which competes in another league with other high-end recording software.

A Massive Undertaking, Done Well

Hi: First of all, I have been around audio recording since way before computer audio recording ever existed. This book is a composite of a number of different generations of this program, which had to be a massive challenge for the author to assimilate evenhandedly. These programs (including the video ones) are like the seven cities of Troy, with each generation being built on the foundations of the previous one. Imho, these programs become vastly complicated, to anyone who is not deeply knowledgable about the nuances of these programs. In fact, I find it so complicated, as I am basically teaching myself, and even though I feel I am fairly computer comfortable, I just really and truly miss analog recording, just so I don't have to go through all of the frustration with the intricacies of working digitally. Then again, I am not a teenage computer Wiz Kid. I do however, own Sony Acid Studio 9, and it seems to be a little more user friendly, and it appears to have more capabilites, but then again, I use Sonar on my XP computer, and Acid on my Windows 7 Home Premium computer. All in all, I tip my hat to this author, who must be one heck of a digital music technician...

A Very Easy to Understand and Follow Marathon Training Book

I found this book to be thoroughly readable, filled with useful information and even entertaining. The writing is clear, concise and accessible to the average reader. It is not filled with jargon so that as a novice I felt comfortable reading the book and fully understood the plans and techniques set forth. The personal stories about different runners were fun to read and quite inspiring as well.

Don walks you through the entire marathon process with special sections on everything from equipment to stretching with special attention to race day nutrition and hydration. I found these sections to be both useful and reassuring. However, the best part of the book is the training plan and descriptions. As a working parent with two kids my training time is limited so I need to make the most of each training session. In clear detail, Don shows how to make each session count and avoid the "junk miles." That alone is a reason to purchase the book and follow the plan.

I am 100% confident that this book will make me a better runner just as Be Iron Fit has improved my triathlon training beyond my expectations.

Perfect for masters-level athletes

Don Fink's book is perfect for athletes who want to keep improving after turning 40. I've run 12 marathons, hit 40 and felt like I was plateauing. With Don's program, I feel stronger and healthier (and no nagging injuries!). I highly recommend this book for anyone who runs, regardless of the skill level. Fink's philosophy works for athletes at all levels, from elite to middle-of-the-pack. Try it! It will put you on the road to your ultimate potential.

Three Magic Bullets - worth reading for any age not just 40+

Saw this on a friend's list and since I fit the profile (over 40, training for a marathon) I thought I'd give it a shot. The author, Don Fink, is a tri-athlete holding one of the fastest times ever recorded by an athlete in the 45-49 year old category. I'm halfway through the book and so far so good. The author's main theme is what he calls the "Three Magic Bullets" (TMBs) for training. These are the Marathon Pacing Session, the Long Run, and Higher-intensity Repeats. My wife is a runner so I was already familiar with the concepts but Don Fink's analysis and explanation are worth reading.

Don Fink also advocates for training with a heart rate monitor as your heart rate is a good indicator for your body's thresholds for handling aerobic and anaerobic activity - both critical aspects for clearing lactic acid buildup and for energy storage and consumption. I haven't tried this yet but I'm convinced it's worth trying.

Skipping ahead there is a section on nutrition and diet and the importance of weight maintenance. I've learned from experience that being even a few pounds lighter makes a significant difference in my running so I look forward to seeing what the author has to say.

I also enjoy his profiles of different 40+ athletes throughout the book; they provide some additional inspiration.
