Computer science as an engineering discipline has been spectacularly successful. Yet it is also a philosophical enterprise in the way it represents the world and creates and manipulates models of reality, people, and action. In this book, Paul Dourish addresses the philosophical bases of human-computer interaction. He looks at how what he calls "embodied interaction" -- an approach to interacting with software systems that emphasizes skilled, engaged practice rather than disembodied rationality -- reflects the phenomenological approaches of Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and other twentieth-century philosophers. The phenomenological tradition emphasizes the primacy of natural practice over abstract cognition in everyday activity. Clear, interesting, inspiring, but also a little like a religion

One of the strong sides of this book is that it makes it really easy for the reader - things are generally summarized and repeated exactly in the right places. It can serve as an introduction to the world of phenomenology, sociology and philosophy as pertaining to Human-Computer Interfaces.
It felt more like a mixture between a proposal and an introductory philosophical treatise than an overview of the current state of the field (it carries the word "foundations" in its title for a reason).
After reading it however, I still wasn't convinced that "social computing", "tangible computing" and "embodied interaction" really add up to a construct that can effectively inform the design of new HCI devices even though this claim was repeated throughout the book almost like a prayer wheel.
Interestingly, while the book points out the meaning of embodiment in already existing work practices, it fails to give any strategies on how these theories can actually be applied to the design of effective new HCI devices that go beyond the shiny toys produced at MIT Media Lab.
The loophole seems to be that embodied practices can only arise once the tools are defined, so that it is hard to predict what practices will be used once it's out there - since the way we use tools is largely improvisatory, as Dourish points out.
I also can not stop to wonder if the term "embodiment" is akin to "multimedia" - a belief system that can mean so many things that it effectively disintegrates sooner or later.

So, while it left me not exactly sure that there really is another end to it, it was certainly worthwhile and inspiring to work through this book in a thorough manner - I now feel courageous enough to put my nose into "Being and Time" by Heidegger.

A very interesting, and yet clear to read and follow book. "Where the action is" was a reading reference for my qualifier exam and after reading it I was hooked up to HCI forever. Very exciting and a "must read" for all HCI researchers.

This is a major work on the human/computer Interface

This is a major work on the redesign of the human/computer interface. It is well written but very deep. Excellent academic research is clearly demonstrate throughout. I would not say, however, that it is an easy read.
Engineering research does not generally have to be as strongly academically founded as scientific research. The controlling factor is "does it work," not how does it relate to previous work. This tendency leads to problems when it is necessary to do multidisciplinary work involving both engineering and science. The redesign of the human/computer interface is just such a problem.
As an engineer working independently in this field, I have often wished for the time and resources to do proper academic studies. Paul Dourish has now done them for me. All my future publications will have to show consistency with this book, show they are clearly outside the area covered by this book, or show the book is wrong. The last alternative is most unlikely. I think I can show my work, based on Darwinism and ontology, complies with the first option. I am certain that my work will be stronger for this effort.

Great book, great price

I took this book on a recent research trip to a preserve near La Selva, and used it daily. Not just a field guide with pretty pictures, this book contains a key to the species. Since it is specific to this area of the country, it cut down on the amount of material that had to be sorted through to ID organisms. I could quickly key out species without having to worry about whether or not this was the right area for that particular species. The photos were clear and beautiful, with different color phases and sexual dimorphisms illustrated. If you are traveling to this specific area of Costa Rica, this book is really useful. It's small, lightweight, easy to use, and CHEAP!

Good if you stay in La Selva, Costa Rica

Nice compact book. The only trouble is that it is so specific to one little area that it misses species that may be just down the road or just less common in this area. Nice for a quick reference for common species but not as extensive as I would like. The keys are useful. It is not always easy finding a field guide with good keys!

Excellent book, great destination

One of the most user-friendly field guides I've ever carried. Portable (for what it's worth*), clearly written and well laid-out, with dichotomous keys to help zero in on the ID of most any herp you get a good enough look at while visiting Costa Rica's La Selva Research Station--itself a very well laid-out, user-friendly destination for DIY eco-tourists.

NB: A number of genus names (especially frogs) have changed since the book's publication, but you can still use it for ID, then cross-reference online for the updated names. Same probably true of just about any amphibian field guide that wasn't published more or less yesterday.

*Odds are pretty good you'll be walking in rain when you want to use this book, and it's no kind of waterproof. We brought laminated copies of the keys with us.

A Less Than Brilliant Stoppard Play

This play was a big hit in NYC,at Lincoln Center a story of 19 Century Russian intellectuals writers, Turgenyev,et al but it is too long and does not take the time to develop the philosophical and literary ideas that Stoppard did so well in Hapgood(quantum mechanics and the british spy system) Arcadia,( a play that the NY Times Brantley said that when the British do it is the best play ever, and deals with entropy, the second law of thermodynamics, accidently invented by Thomosina Cloverly a 19 Cent teen age artistocrat genius)and The Invention of Love,(the story of the poet A. E Housman, the young poet played brilliantly by Robert Sean Leonard,the doctor buddy of House and hero in Dead Poet's Society) While TCOU play is not bad, it takes about two days to see, with breaks. And
compared to the "genius" of Stoppard's past work.I could not finish reading it and I love great plays. EAN

Bit of a slogfest.

I'm a big Tom Stoppard fan but this trilogy of plays took a while to get through. I'm sure it plays better than it reads and a lot of it is pretty funny. But it is hard to keep all the different characters straight and the moving back and forth in time and place can sometimes have you flipping back a page or two to remind yourself where and when you're at. If you're a Stoppard fan or a fan of heady and yet sometimes ridiculous philosophical talk, you'll probably enjoy these plays. Would love to see a good production of this somewhere.

Plays must not be meant to read. This award-winning trilogy of plays is almost impossible to read, my worst experience with reading since Ivanhoe. All of these plays must be valuable to an audience only if it sees the performance. Tom Stoppard was the author.
From one play to the next, I have no recollection of an outstanding act, scene, character, conversation, analogy, vision, or subtext. If I have to remember something from these works it is the presence of Turgenev. It might also be the study of Pushkin. In other words, the connection this play makes to me is only the mention of writers I have enjoyed, so a little bit of a cheap trick. To me, a good play can’t be rapid exchanges. To have written these conversations, Stoppard could have written a novella instead where it is conventional to hide dialogue in the bulk of what is otherwise written, scenery and action and flashbacks, philosophy. A play relies almost entirely on the articulation of unnatural speech, spotlighted speech, but Stoppard basically goes a line and a half at a time. How would characters grow character if not be an emphasis on speech that is more than routine? I am amazed at this trilogy’s capacity to make money.
As far as the content, I am turned off by the rich aristocrats advocating for the revolutions. Although inevitable is Dostoevsky too, matchmaking has its limits in what is supposed to be the visual performance of a play. There is Koyla the deaf kid. There is epilepsy. I don’t know if this makes for authentic Russian plot or if these are the plays of a man who has just read his Dostoevsky, Pushkin, and Turgenev. There is Herzen and Natasha, Herzen and Natasha. I don’t think I should have to review the dramatis personae every time I need to figure out who they are. I should just be able to read their lines. This is a very tiresome historical travelogue. I thought this would be a book about one place and one time and characters who did not have children. Kids just make all the action about whom to marry.

Short, cute, steamy

The good:

*Callie was a little nerdy and shy, but sweet and hard working. She loves her family, not a drama queen.

*The setting. I'm a sucker for a holiday romance.

*Callie's finally standing up to her overbearing cousin. That was cheer-worthy.

The not-as-good:

*For being a lawyer, Adam had poor communication skills where his feelings for Callie were concerned.

*The sex was rushed, it went from not seeing each other for six years to pound town in less than a weekend. And in such a short book there were a lot of sex scenes.

*The sheer volume of potato chips and ice cream Callie ate would have made her a walrus. Eye roll.

Cute story.

This was a short, simple and sweet read. I read it in one night and there wasn't much depth, but we knew that going in. I really did like the heroine and connected on the nerd level. She was a nerd throughout high school and got picked on because she was an easy target, but also competetion because she just didn't care. She never stood up for herself, so she carried being cautious into adulthood. There were moments that when the mom did the pushing I giggled to myself because Callie needed that. Callie our heroine has had a huge crush on Adam all throughout her teenage years. They haven't seen each other in 6 years, but when they do see each other all of her feelings come back. Our hero Adam was a really sweet hero. He understood our heroine and he wasn't to pushy with her. I wish he was a little bit, but that would of added more development to this cute short story. I think one of my favorite parts was at the football game when our hero claimed Callie and where Callie really stood up to Amy. In the end this was a quick fun read for a fall evening!

Callie has not been back home for the holiday in 6 years. But thankfully she has a chance to see her family for an extended period of time. At the last moment she finds out that Adam her brother Cory's best friend is going to be there also . This is major 'cause Adam was also her major crush growing up .
Adam realizes that his feelings for Callie have not gone away . He is breathless when she first came home . And scrambling trying to figure out a way to get her to stay . Great story 5 stars . Sexy and romantic.

A Very Powerful Book!

This book helped me understand the meaning of God's word and the stories He uses to illustrate His point, like The Prodigal Son, the conversion of Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus, and the conversion of 17th century slave trader turned abolitionist preacher, John Newton. In addition, I got a good definition of Grace, Mercy, and Justification. It made me think.

Their conversions did not happen overnight. Saul of Tarsus, a Hebrew by birth, a Roman citizen who spoke Greek, and understood Aramaic, which was the language Jesus spoke, persecuted Christians and was on his way to Damascus to arrest the sect he found there before he heard the voice of God say "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"

John Newton was a slave trader. He understood the Scriptures thanks to his mother, but he was rebellious. Like the Prodigal Son, grace came when they both hit bottom. In this case, he went below to get a knife for the captain during a storm. The man who took his place on deck was swept overboard. When he retired, the captain that took his place aboard ship was lost at sea.

The trials we Christians go through are a test of faith and endurance. If the Lord removed us from every trial we faced, we wouldn't grow in understanding. By leading us through it, we sometimes understand the reason.

Dr. Jeremiah's words are both timely and timeless. This is a powerful book.

Regardless of what we have done in the past, no one is beyond the reach of our loving God! What a blessing it is to know that God loves ME (despite all my failures and all my faults)! Using John Newton's hymn "Amazing Grace" as his outline, Dr. Jeremiah explains how God lovingly extends an offer of grace to each and every sinner. Our choice is to accept His offer--or not.

What This Book Is About

This book is designed to improve your vocabulary. The focus is on the advanced vocabulary you will need for the GRE revised General Test. Having a well-developed vocabulary is useful in many settings and especially critical to successful performance on the GRE. In particular, the Verbal Reasoning section relies heavily on an understanding of advanced vocabulary.

The quality of your responses to the Analytical Writing prompts depends in part on your knowing vocabulary that allows you to express your ideas clearly.

We use a contextual approach to teach new vocabulary. This approach does not rely on conventional flash-card methods. Rather, new words are introduced in meaningful contexts—i.e., in passages, most of which consist of brief narratives. Numerous exercises, activities, and puzzles are then provided in order to reinforce your understanding of the new words. Through this approach, learning new words should be fun rather than just being limited to the use of flash cards and drills.

Outline of the Book

The book consists of six chapters:

Chapters 1 and 2 provide context-based vocabulary instruction, along with exercises, activities, and games.

Chapter 3 consists of challenging crossword puzzles that test your understanding of what you learned in Chapters 1 and 2.

Chapter 4 introduces strategies and resources you can use to build your vocabulary further.

Chapter 5 presents a brief introduction to the GRE Verbal Reasoning section.

Chapter 6 describes strategies that will help you do your best on the GRE Verbal Reasoning section.

Guide to the First Two Chapters

Following is some information that will be helpful as you read Chapters 1 and 2—the chapters that provide instruction, and are the longest chapters in the book.

Chapters 1 and 2 consist of 12 units apiece. Each unit begins with a story in which advanced vocabulary words are underlined. You will be asked to guess the meanings of these words, and the meanings will then be provided.

Next you will work through a series of exercises, activities, and games that reinforce and test your understanding of the new words. These exercises and so on consist of matching, fill-in-the-blanks, puzzles, and more.

In Chapters 1 and 2, every third unit will consist of a review that provides additional exercises, activities, and games that cover what you learned�in the previous two units. Most of the review units will also introduce one or two new words. Answers to all of the exercises, activities, and games in the main units and review units are provided at the end of each chapter.

but good for starters

It doesn't have many words, but good for starters. I bought is in the last phase of preparations, so was not much impressed with it. Wordpower is better then this. I bought an old copy, so happy overall.

Good but not alone

It's really good for learning main vocab that you need to know. I would also use it with Kaplan GRE flashcards and premier study book. But I really like the contextual learning because you don't just recognize words on paper, you remember them and are able to use them. I recommend this book if you want more than just flashcards. It's a great tool.

I love Warren. He is detailed, indepth and does an excellent job at applying to your life. I learn a lot from his studies. The Joshua study is excellent and focuses on leadership; being a leader and how to follow a leader. Super study!

Joshua's bible study by Wiersbe was a great help in understanding the book of JoashuA. IT WAS EASY TO FOLLOW AND THE QUESTIONS WERE GREAT. I HAVE CONTINUED TO BUY EACH BOK OF DIFFERENT BOOKS OF THE BIBLE INORDER TO LEARN AND UNDERSTAND THEM.

I was rather disappointed with this book

I was rather disappointed with this book; it focuses on traditional grammar instead of functional language use. The grammar topics seem like odd choices to me; for example there is a section on proper nouns versus ordinary nouns----OK, but not a difficult concept. Also, it asks students to identify whether nouns in a sentence are subjects, direct objects, or predicate noun and there is a section explaining linking verbs versus transitive verbs; these are sort of OK to know but not terribly useful. However, there is virtually nothing on phrasal verbs, which are a big problem in English. I haven't yet found any discussion of gerunds vs. infinitives, and the section on question formation is pretty brief.
It's based on old-timey grammar, calling modals 'auxiliary verbs,' which they aren't really, as they do not behave just like verbs.
The book is sort of like somebody took an old standard eighth-grade English grammar book and tweaked it a bit for ESL.
I bought a small class set and would probably return them if it wasn't a hassle. Any text by Azar would have been better.

Great for the price!!

First off, this book is great for the price! Exercises are great and students can learn with help from someone adept in English. My only complaint, which is a small one, is that the directions and explanations are tough for non-native speakers to understand, and the italicized small-font directions are an eye sore. But balancing content and price, this is a great value!

Second off, to smash the accusation of past perfect errors away.... There are none. For example:
1. Mike has BORROWED/BORROWING my dictionary.
Answer: Mike has BORROWED my dictionary. (Past perfect)
This implies that Mike has borrowed my dictionary in the past BUT he isn't borrowing it any longer.

Mike has borrowed my dictionary several times.

Why is it different than past? Here's why:

Mike borrowed my dictionary. (Past)
This implies that he borrowed the dictionary AND he is still borrowing it. (Just because of the lack of context)

But you can say: Mike borrowed my dictionary last week, but he returned it to me today.

You can't say: Mike borrowed my book several times.
You must use past perfect here and insert "has!"

Buy this book and help nonnative speakers learn English, there are no grammatical problems here.

After further education, the above example is not PAST PERFECT tense, it is actually PRESENT PERFECT tense.

Regardless of the names, the grammar is still correct!

Mike borrowed my dictionary. (Past, infers that he still has the dictionary due to the lack of time stamps.)
Mike has borrowed my dictionary several times. (Present perfect)
Before flying back to New York, Mike had borrowed my dictionary a few times. (Past perfect)

The examples I made are weird, but the grammar is correct.

Regardless of this technicality, this book can help foreign learners of English learn how English grammar works. Most people don't know what the parts of speech are called, but then again the names of the parts of speech aren't that important. What's most important is understanding what the grammar illustrates.

About the Author

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860–1935) was the author of novels, short stories, poems, and works of nonfiction. She is best known for “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1892), Women and Economics (1898), and the novel Herland (1915).
Dana Seitler is Assistant Professor of Literary Theory and Cultural Studies at Wayne State University.

Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman ...

This is a fairly quick read of a book, longer than Gilman's usual short story, but not something that would take weeks to read either. This particular copy is a bit different than most books. This one is a reprint of a "historic book" which in this case seems to mean the original page numbers happen to be in the middle of paragraphs, sentences and sometimes even words. It's a bit distracting at first, but you get used to it after a page or two. Each page is laid out in three columns, and the whole thing is the size of a composition notebook, though not nearly as thick. If that layout would distract you, there are other printings available in "regular" paperback size, some are even anthologies. Recommended read, it's always interesting to see where Gilman went with her various works.

Should be studied more often

_The Crux_ isn't "great literature" but it is well worth reading for the insight into Charlotte Perkins Gilman's thinking about sexuality, gender, and health. In this text, you can trace some of the elements of her belief in eugenics, intertangled with her conviction that women should have satisfying careers and independent lives. In other words, as with so many of Gilman's contemporaries, the ideas that we think of as "progressive" and "reactionary" were, in this era, mutually constitutive. _The Crux_ makes for fascinating reading and lively discussion.
