Wish I liked it more.

It’s hard for me to write this review because I wanted to love this book, and a part of me wonders if I didn’t like this book because it’s not the type of book I prefer to read. Some people like to read romances where the overcoming of obstacles is the main part of the book with the finale being the couple coming together in a relationship. I tend to like books where a relationship occurs and then they grow as a couple. This book falls in the first category.

When I came across Parker in Attraction, it was instant LOVE. To quote Disney’s Cinderella, the secret to a good life is to be kind and to be courageous. I think that’s the secret to a great heroine too. In Attraction, Parker was kind and courageous. She went outside of her comfort zones (of a lab closet) to attend a frat party and warned Martin of a nefarious plan. Absolutely loved her for embracing change with� rational and zainy. Then, in Heat, it was almost a mental game. There was a push/pull relationship with lots of heat. And now with Capture, I wonder where the Kaitlin I fell in love with went. She was fearful. She hid from the fear of rejection, and she was obtuse to the situation. And in a way, Martin’s mind games didn’t help Parker’s faith in him either.�

I’m use to Penny Reid writing books about smart, quirky women over coming fears and fighting for their happily ever after. With this book, Kaitlin Parker was intelligent and she was quirky, but she lacked the courage and tenacity that her fellow heroines had.�

Martin, Martin, Martin.

If you are familiar with this trilogy, then you know that book 1, Attraction, introduced us to Kaitlyn Parker and Martin Sandeke, fabulous collegiate chem partners turned spring break vacationers with a heavy dose of mutual attraction. In book 2, Heat, this attraction turned red hot as Kaitlyn and Martin coaxed their relationship into heated passion. But then the unthinkable happened, and we were left heart-broken alongside them in a wretched cliffhanger.

But all the waiting was completely worth it. Even though all three books are now out, I still highly recommend taking even a small break (at least a few days to a week) between books. There is something necessary about this timely pause to let the previous events simmer, yet also prepare you for the next stage in Martin and Kaitlyn's relationship. Each book is its own personality, and each stage allows Martin and Kaitlyn to grow in incredible ways. So just as their journey needed its own "breaks," so also do we so we can be even more impacted by their conclusion.

Having said all that, all the intense anxiety I felt throughout this book was completely worth it. I was so excited to fill myself up with Martin and Kaitlyn, having not a clue how things would turn out, except desperately hoping for a happy ending. As the synopsis reveals, K&M have been apart for months. From Kaitlyn's perspective, she has been trying to heal and move on from her love for Martin, and at the same time she has been exploring a new side to her that Martin brought out, the confidence and vision for her musical side. When Kaitlyn sees Martin again, we learn that he has also been busy these last months, but the specifics of what or why remain elusive until the details are slowly revealed.

What is not slowly revealed, but glaring obvious, is that these two are not done. Not by a long shot. The sparks may have been ignored, but they were not forgotten. But Martin's approach to Kaitlyn is all new. Which is good because Kaitlyn and Martin are also new. And I loved their story. Yes, I may have trembled with anxiety and anticipation. Yes, my stomach may have been was in knots. Yes, I may have swooned over a certain someone and all his yummy awesomeness. Yes, I may have smiled and sighed and cheered and fanned myself. But I cannot go into great detail with what actually happens. That is something you will want to enjoy all on your own!

I also deeply loved Kaitlyn & Martin. Penny Reid develops characters beautifully, and K&M are two characters you can tell she put her heart and soul into. They are so well thought out, and in this final book, their transformation and maturity is amazing. And I have to say that Martin steals the show a bit here. Seriously, if you were on the fence at all about Martin in the previous books, you won't be after this. I loved Martin! And then having K&M together... All the feels!!

I loved Capture and loved the entire Elements of Chemistry trilogy. I miss Martin and Kaitlyn already, and hope they appear somewhere in something at sometime in some way in the future, the near future, because I loved them so.

Pretty Good, but,,,

I liked the book, loved the ending. The writing was still very good. I still really enjoyed Martin & Kaitlin, and loved their banter, but.....it was a bit frustrating. For two people who were usually very candid and blunt, they went round & round with each each other never admitting how they really felt about each other...time and time, and yes, time again. I personally like for my couples to be together, I want my "couple time"-lots of it, not at the very end.

In a series of case studies, Kaufman (The Ageless Self: Sources of Meaning in Life), a professor of medical anthropology at UC–San Francisco, shows how hospitals, by focusing on life-saving treatments, can indefinitely prolong the life of the critically ill patient, who may drift into an indeterminate zone, suspended between life and death. "[D]ying has become a technical endeavor, a negotiated decision and a murky matter biologically," she notes. Writing with penetrating clarity and detached compassion, and with respect for hospital staff and families alike, Kaufman reveals the dilemmas of hospital death in America today: the shift to patients' control of decision making despite the doctors' greater knowledge; the ethics and practical effects of resuscitation versus pain relief; the complexities of assessing "quality of life" while guessing at the desires of an unconscious patient. Medical anthropologist Kaufman says that only within the last few hundred years has death become a medical concern. Previously, people looked upon death as a private, personal rite of passage that took place within the confines of the home and surrounded by one's loved ones: a spiritual journey. Enter the medical professional, who takes prolonging life--hence, delaying death--as a mission, and dying is transformed into a last gasp for hope, a medical failure. It gets worse. Only within the last half-century has the number of people who die in hospitals come to vastly outnumber that of those dying at home. Moreover, recent scientific research has only served to broaden and more often blur the definition of death and life. A book for anyone, we're all affected by death

I bought this book for a class I'm going to take (I'm a psych undergrad major/human services minor focusing in thanatology). This book is so revealing. Even if you aren't going to take a class on death and dying, thanatology, or something like it, buy this book. We are all are affected by the way hospitals shape the end of our lives, whether it be our own or one of our family members, and this book really sheds some light on it. I recommend this book to anyone. It's incredible.

Reality of healthcare & death

I read this for my Medical Anthropology class in college, and I got lost in the topic. It is a very powerful book, and you find yourself asking questions about hospital/caretaker/hospice care and the ethics and politics of medicine. I really recommend this for college courses, but it's also a good read if you want to emerge yourself in this deep (and sometimes disturbing) reality of death. It made me think about my life (and of course death) planning and how I would want to leave this world and what responsibilities I would press onto my friends and family at the end of life.

A "should read" for everyone

This was an assigned reading for my college medical anthropology class but I was glad I had to read it. Kaufman filled this book with real life situations she encountered during her research. You'll read about men and women (not always elderly) who are dying of one thing or another and see how the patients themselves, their families, and the medical staff deal with (or don't deal with) their situations.

Kaufman uses these true stories to show how patients need to make their wishes clear but how they often don't, and how families can choose to respect or not respect those wishes. She shows that the way the medical community operates is often not very "user friendly", but alternately how the choices people make for themselves and their loved ones basically "tie" the hands of doctors and can prevent them from doing what they think is best.

The chapters are basically set up that she briefly tells the reader what examples she will be using, spends the majority of the body of each chapter recounting conversations between patients, families and medical staff before she concludes the chapter with some analysis. She does say what she wants her readers to get out of each part but the majority of the impact I think readers will get from this book is from reading the individual examples.

My fellow students and I agreed that this book would be a useful read for just about everyone starting at perhaps late high school age depending on maturity levels. At some point in our lives we all will probably know/have direct interaction with someone who is at the end of life, and unless we experience a fatal accident, will likely have to make or plan our own end of life choices. This book will help readers understand the complexity involved and hopefully help make them more prepared forwhen it's their turn to make decisions(as much as anyone can actually be prepared for death....).

Okay, rave review. But there were still a couple hitches. I'll say 2 positives and a negative.

First, and this is why it got 5 stars: it is beyond comprehensive. I own several Palmistry volumes, and browsed maybe ten others. None of them are as complete and comprehensive; teeny lines other tomes miss or say nothing about, are mentioned here. So are nail condition, size, and all sorts of hand mark denotation, that I just haven't seen anywhere else. Specifically? It covers the major and minor lines, mounts (incl. hashamal), nails, hand shapes, finger shapes, combinations, colorations, marks, partial lines, friend lines, and more. I'm only half way through it at this moment, but it's so good I had to review it now!

Second: descriptions, descriptions, descriptions! Example after example, variance after variance. Beyond any other tome, especially over any simple-written "quick guide to palmistry". I actually feel cheated out of the money I spent on most of the other books I have on the subject.

Negatives: sometimes the pictures don't add up to the descriptions, and the organization of the descriptions feels almost haphazard; but that might seem like that just because it was clearly written by someone from a different culture. Of course, what we think of as "well-ordered" may seem to other cultures as "lifeless". But that's minor; I still am blown away.

good reference, based on India culture.

palmistry can have different meanings to different cultures. i was looking for a more western palmistry system. however, this is a good reference book for those who want to learn this palmistry method associated with the myths and legends, of India and the surrounding countries. one method isn't any better than the other, it's just a matter of preference.

The tone of the writing is harshly judgmental and dogmatic. The author seems unable to separate religious sentiments from a dispassionate explanation of palmistry meanings. I would hate to have my hands read by such a palmist as I would not expect any compassion for traits he describes as evil or unbecoming. This book is hard to be digested by non-religious readers and those with a sole interest in palmistry knowledge, detached from religious sentiments, will likely not enjoy this book. Nevertheless, the book provides a good amount of information on palmistry meanings within a cultural setting and sectary mind frame.

The materials reflect the connection between the characters and their environment and are indicative of the wide range of emotions that come together in the story.

Anh’s Anger teaches children that it is okay to feel angry, and shows the technique, often used by child therapists, of externalizing the emotion. Through taking time to "sit’ with his anger, a young child is able to see his anger and talk to it and together they move through the journey of experiencing the different stages of anger until the feeling subsides and finally resolve. Anh’s Anger differs significantly from other books on anger resolution techniques in showing that the child is able to talk about what transpired and accept responsibility for hurtful things that he may have said or done.

The author’s intention is to help parents understand that there is an alternative to "time out’s" as a means of helping children to express themselves when feeling angry, while providing children with a mechanism for internal dialogue during a "time out" or when "sitting" with their anger.

Through reading the story, children will learn to acknowledge anger when it arises, understand the cause of their anger, and ultimately feel safe expressing themselves and accepting accountability for their actions when appropriate. By learning these skills, children, will grow comfortable with them and carry them into adulthood with ease and confidence.

About the Author
Gail Silver is a former Child Advocate attorney and founder of Yoga Child, a Philadelphia based yoga studio, where she teaches yoga classes, writes yoga music and meditations, and develops the Yoga Child school-based yoga and mindfulness curriculum. Gail has appeared on several news shows to discuss the benefits of yoga and was the recipient of a Parents’ Choice Recommended Award in 2007 for the Yoga Child CD, A Peaceful Place Inside. She is a script consultant for the yoga segment of "The Good Night Show" on PBS Kids Sprout. Gail provides editorials on the benefits of yoga to the Expectant Mothers Guide and teaches birth preparation courses for couples through integration of the principles of mindfulness, birth education and yoga. She resides in Philadelphia with her husband and three children where she stumbles every day in her lifetime practice of mindfulness.

Christiane Kr�mer was born in 1963 in Germany. She studied toy design at the University of Art and Design in Halle and later Graphic Design in Kassel. She moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. in the early 90s where she received a BFA in Illustration from Parsons School of Design. She lives in Brooklyn working as a freelance as illustrator with a special interest in multicultural work, in recent years with an emphasis on Asian cultures. She previously illustrated Flowergirl Butterflies (a Capitol Choices "Noteworthy Book for Children 2004), The Treehouse Children, (published by Simon & Schuster), and God the Parent's Blessings.

Outstanding Book for Older Kids, too!

I purchased this book for my 7 year-old daughter. I was worried that a picture book wouldn't be appropriate for her, especially since some of the reviews discussed the appropriateness of this book for 2 year-olds. My daughter is reading Harry Potter books and is quite articulate. Yet I was intrigued by the Buddhist perspective on anger and wanted to share this with her. Ahn's Anger really spoke to me and my child. My child really "got" the book and wanted to talk about it. I wanted to share it with some adults I know. It helped me learn some simple, accessible ways of thinking and talking about anger myself. I think this is a useful book for people of all ages. It is well written and beautifully illustrated. I highly recommend it.

Beautifully Executed Book on All Counts, Just Not the Right Fit for Our Child

I was ecstatic to receive this book. I'd read the reviews, scanned a few pages, and ordered it straight away. The target? My moody five-year old. My hope? That it would speak to her, and help her deal more effectively and appropriately with her frequent feelings of anger and frustration. That's not how it went down. And I'm not convinced that's the book's fault.

Anh is building a tower - the best ever, of course - when his grandfather interrupts him to announce dinnertime. Anh is not finished with his tower and has no plans of giving it up. When grandfather tries to get down on his level and explain that he must finish his tower later and eat before dinner gets cold, Anh erupts, scattering his tower and telling his grandfather that he hates him. Grandfather suggests he take his anger into his room, where Anh discovers his anger is metaphorically a big hairy monster and that if he takes good care of his anger, first working it out through pounding his fists, then through breathing to calm himself, that his anger disappears. Once his anger is gone, Anh articulates to his grandfather why he was so angry and apologizes. Grandfather thanks him for his kind words and all is well again.

I love the illustrations. They are beautiful, full of colorful emotion, and appropriate. In truth, I love the book.

My daughter seemed to enjoy reading it also. But it was the aftermath of that which causes the book to score low for me. Mind you, my child might be the one in a million who would take this interpretation and run with it, but she took it to mean that she should conjure her anger up then and there - and furthermore, use it as a playmate. She was utterly uncooperative for the rest of the night (2-3 hours) and she dashed to and fro wreaking havoc whenever we turned out backs (trying to tear up the carpets for example, yelling, screaming, and hitting people). The part about following Anh's example once her anger truly came out (and it did, since hitting is not allowed and she was told to retreat until she could behave), she seemed to miss the point in the book where Anh harnessed his anger and went straight to the tactic of using her anger as a separate object with which to threaten us (ie. my anger's coming out and it's going to do this and this to you if you try to make me calm down!) and seemed to be asserting her belligerence with more fervor than usual. The night ended poorly, and exhausted and feeling rather beaten, I've decided to return this lovely book. May it give a new reader the peace it promotes.
