About the Author
Paddy Scannell worked for many years at the University of Westminster (London) where he and his colleagues established, in 1975, the first undergraduate degree program in Media Studies in the UK. He is a founding editor of Media, Culture and Society which began publication in 1979 and is now issued six times yearly. He is the author of A Social History of British Broadcasting, 1922-1939 which he wrote with David Cardiff, editor of Broadcast Talk and author of Radio, Television and Modern Life. He is currently working on a trilogy. The first volume, Media and Communication, was published in June 2007. Professor Scannell is now working on the second volume, Television and the Meaning of 'Live.' The third volume, Love and Communication, is in preparation. His research interests include broadcasting history and historiography, the analysis of talk, the phenomenology of communication and culture and communication in Africa.

About the Author
The author completed his automotive apprenticeship in 1981, winning 3 awards along the way. In 1982, he started a business modifying road and stage rally vehicles. 1986 saw a change of direction into civil engineering in the rail industry where he still works as a Structures Engineer for Network Rail. John began his love of off-roading whilst shooting and fishing in his home county of Norfolk. He is founder and chairman of the Norfolkrhinos Suzuki Off-road Club, and writes a monthly column for 4X4 Mart magazine.

As a Grand Vitara owner I felt more than slightly robbed - the cover of this book says and I quote "Covers LJ, SJ, Samurai, Vitara, Grand Vitara & Jimny", the Grand Vitara is mentioned only in passing as a potential source for upgrade parts, and even then incorrectly - there was never a 2.0 litre V6 engined Grand Vitara - the 2.0 litre V6 was used only in the SV620 V6 Vitara which was a predecessor to the Grand Vitara.

I was also disappointed with the constant references to Calmini Manufacturing, the book stops just short of being a Calmini catalog.

This is one book, that had I picked it up in a brick & mortar store I would have left there, a 30 second flip through would have been all it took to tell me it wasn't worth even the Kindle price.

Very good

I am glad with this full coloured book: the information is very good, real and precise. Just one thing: the english makes me difficult...there are some words that i cannot understand easily. Anyway, i think it is a good book for a xtreme suzuki samurai owner's. Very good presentation, paper, and pictures!

For many reasons, I consider this the last of the series. Fleming didn't finish "The Man With The Golden Gun" and was ill when writing the rough draft that was left behind at his death. It was simply awful, especially given Cmdr. Fleming's own experience with British Intelligence.
"You Only Live Twice" finds Bond in a slump, unable to recover from the murder of his wife of only a few hours on their honeymoon. He's been eased back into work, but has literally made a mess of 2 missions and M is seriously considering revoking his Double-O status.
The Service consulting physician is fond of 007, and suggests an alternative. He states a man of Bond's psychological makeup cannot rise unless he is challenged against overwhelming odds, so he suggests giving him a literally impossible mission to accomplish and free reign to do it.
Unlike the usual assassination assignments, Bond is asked to travel to Japan and make contact with the head of the Japanese Intelligence Service, a mysterious man of which little is known other than his name; Tiger Tanaka. This is to be primarily a diplomatic mission, and he is to offer to trade British Intelligence resources & information in exchange for the treasure trove of Japan's Russian spy network. It is thought highly unlikely Japan will work with the British and will be a coup if Bond pulls it off. Bond accepts, and begins his adventure to the Far East; another routine assignment with more than meets the eye, scores settled with Ernst Blofeld, ninja training, and a second chance at life.

Bond in Japan

Most people are familiar with the films of James bond, agent 007, licensed to kill, but the novels written by Ian Fleming can be very different from the books that provide their names. Certainly this is the case in "You only Live Twice." Both the film and the book are set in Japan but beyond that they part ways quickly.

In the book James Bond is nearly finished. 8 months after the murder of his wife Tracy at the end of "On Her Majesties Secret Service" he has gone from M's best man to the dregs of the service. M, considering his dismissal is prevailed upon to give Bond one last chance.

Bond is promoted out of his beloved 00 section and transferred to the diplomatic branch with the code number 7777, and given a near impossible mission. He is go to Japan and convince the head of the Japanese Secret Service to share with Great Britain their decrypts of top secret Soviet messages. The problem is that post WW2 the United States views Japan as its private preserve and does not like poachers.

The rather more serious problem is that Bond does not have much to bargain with and when it is quickly revealed that the Japanese are not interested in his one bargaining chip he is left with very little to go on.What he has is his own life and skills, and in return for these magic decrypts, Japan requires Bond to kill a Swiss botanist named Dr. Shatterhand, a man of evil intent and deed who, for political reasons the Japanese police cannot move against but a gaijan whose arrest if he fails cannot be tied to the government? This is acceptable.

This is actually one of Fleming's weaker outings for Bond. Although he is in full force in his pacing and plotting and character development, part of what is missing is the setting. During the Second World War, Fleming was deeply involved in the planning and control of British and American espionage units and his writing carries the flavor of how things really work, a far cry form the gadgets and gizmos of the films,

However part of the charm of the books is his descriptions of the places where Bond's missions take him. Fleming knew France, Jamaica and the United States well and this carries over in his descriptions of the places. The reader truly gets a feel of the casinos, the beaches, the hotels and the streets. But Fleming did not know Japan and this is reflected in his writing, details that are common in other books are lacking here.

If this is the first Bond book you've read, it is highly enjoyable but if you are well familiar with the books by Fleming, this will be a little disappointing. James bond is still in effect with all his prowess but the world he is moving in, compared with earlier books, is empty and unfulfilling.

Vance is fast becoming the voice of James Bond on audio books and does a masterful job of working his way through Fleming's rich cast of charatcers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Cyril Kornbluth (1924-1958) was the youngest and perhaps the most brilliant of that great group of satirists (Frederik Pohl, Robert Sheckley, Damon Knight, William Tenn) whom Horace Gold drafted to become the characteristic voice of his magazine. Kornbluth was a child prodigy (writing at 16 stories which became classics of the field) and auto-didact, first-generation fan and newspaperman (a Chicago-based wire service) whose heart and health were wrecked by active combat duty at the Battle of the Bulge and other venues; after the war he became a fully committed science fiction writer who moved from journalism in Chicago to a career in the New York area. In collaboration with Frederik Pohl he wrote THE SPACE MERCHANTS (1952) for GALAXY which became the classic satirical novel of advertising and GLADIATOR-AT-LAW which brought the same satirical force to the housing industry. There were several other novels, science fiction and mainstream, written with Pohl, two with Judith Merril and several (TAKEOFF, NOT THIS AUGUST) written alone. He struggled for years with health, economic and familial obligations (he was married to a sculptress and had two young sons) and died suddenly on a train platform, sprinting for a New York bound train in March 1958. A recent (2009) biography by Mark Rich gives much detail about his painful life and brilliant career.

A Masterpiece

A masterpiece of prophesy and satire that has come all too true. Much science fiction of this era has become dated. Kornbluth keeps his punch. 'Tis even better than THE SPACE MERCHANTS or GLADIATOR AT LAW, two products of his teamup with Pohl. No one writes like this now, I suspect, because it is hard to satirize the a world so absurd that you can't write of anything more moronic. Kornbluth died too early. One wonders if his wit would have grown and maybe soured. But that's fine. Sour wit is better than none at all. There isn't a bad story in this collection and the title story is one you'll never forget. Frankly, rereading it, I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Thank you Galaxy for giving him to us, but you're gone too. It isn't a matter of the good old days. They weren't better. It was just that our stupidity hadn't caught up with us yet. Even Kornbluth couldn't save us now. But reading him will make us laugh as we sink into oblivion. If you like Swift and Sterne, you'll love this.

it's coming true...

Written around 1951, this is a story about the future (from their standpoint) and how those of lesser intelligence bred like rabbits, while the smarter people refrained, and how this led to the population having an average IQ of 40.

I read this as a teenager & never have forgotten it; it's an all-time classic. A great read if you can find a copy (check [...], which of course would make it a 'listen' rather than a read).

And damned if it isn't coming true.

A Good Read, But 'White' is More Concentrated and Concise

This lengthy book isn't needed if you read Hara's book, 'White', which neatly summarizes his philosophy and approach to design. I've given this four stars instead of five simply for length. Hara is at his best when he's working in a concise form (IMO). If you are thinking about this book, check out 'White' first. If you really liked White (like I did) then this is the next step, although much of the material will be repeated and illustrated with case studies that may (or may not) add value for you.

Love this book. Tons of photos, illustrations, lots of insight into the Japanese aesthetic. Makes a great argument about how the Japanese and NOT the Swiss invented modern design.

The idea of committing the perfect murder, by which I mean, committing a murder and not being apprehended, is the ultimate intellectual challenge. A select few have endeavoured to put theory into practice. Some have succeeded.
A few experts will reluctantly admit that there might be a way to get away with murder. They say it would require an undetectable weapon, a perfect location to commit the crime and an ingenious way to dispose of the body.
There are many pitfalls a criminal can avoid by studying forensic science, just as there are many ways a poisoner can evade capture by studying toxicology. For example, did you know that the greatest source of evidence in a murder case is extracted from the victim’s body? Forensic science will use an autopsy to determine the time of death; the victim’s last meal; the manner of death; the weapon used; maybe even the actual weapon itself. Marks on the body will assist the pathologist in this regard. All of this information, pieced together, will bring them closer to catching the culprit. But there are ways to avoid this.
There are ways of killing a person without leaving any marks on the body. There are ways to avoid leaving your DNA at the crime scene. There are ways to dispose of the body so that it will never be recovered, at least not in your lifetime.
Even as you read this book, someone, somewhere is committing the perfect murder. They will never be caught and forensic science, although it has greatly enhanced detection rates, is not yet fool proof. Despite what you may have read elsewhere that the perfect murder exists only in Crime Fiction novels the fact is, that thousands of perfect murders are committed every year.
Dr. Harold Shipman is the world’s most prolific serial killer who killed over one thousand of his patients before making some some basic mistakes which resulted in his capture. It was only when his motive became one of greed that he was caught. Up to that point he had committed a thousand perfect murders.

About the Author
David Elio Malocco was born in Dundalk, County Louth, Ireland. His father was born in Casalattico in Frosinone in Italy and his mother was born in Monaghan in Ireland. He was educated at the Christian Brothers School in Dundalk and his parents later sent him to St. Patrick’s College in Cavan where they hoped he would be ordained as a Roman Catholic priest. But he chose law and business instead. He received his Bachelor of Civil Law degree from University College Dublin and spent fifteen years as a criminal lawyer before taking a second degree at the Open University, Milton Keynes in England where he obtained a first class honors degree in Psychology majoring in Cognitive Development. In 1991 he realized a personal ambition and moved to New York where he studied film direction, production and writing for film at New York University. Since then he has written numerous screenplays in several genre and has written, produced and directed several shorts and three feature films, Virgin Cowboys, Magdalen and Jack Gambel: The Enigma. He later studied creative writing at Oxford University. He has written several books on true crime and forensic science. The books were motivated by dual diplomas he had taken. The first was in the Psychology of Criminal Profiling and the second in Forensic Science specializing in crime scene analysis. Packed with fascinating info and well written

As a mystery writer, I really loved this book. Tons of great info on crime scene protocol, forensics, police procedure, even how the police are trained to get confessions! Useful for me so that my readers don't go: "That never happens in real life," the kiss of death for a mystery.

And if you read this book, you'll also realize that committing the perfect murder is very, very difficult thing to do. Thank heavens!

A real treat

This is a very informative book about forensic science and crime scene analysis with an excellent chapter on the law relating to Miranda and Search rights. Very well written and easy to understand. Best suited to anyone who likes crime programs like CSI, Dexter and Criminal Minds. I thought it was very good and well worth buying.

About the Author
H. E. Bates was born in 1905 in Northamptonshire. He worked as a journalist and clerk on a local newspaper before publishing his first book, The Two Sisters, when he was twenty. In the next fifteen years he acquired a distinguished reputation for his stories about English country life. During the Second World War he was a Squadron Leader in the R.A.F. The Darling Buds of May, the first of the popular Larkin family novels, was followed by A Breath of French Air (1959), When the Green Woods Laugh (1960), Oh! To Be in England (1963). His works have been translated into sixteen languages. H. E. Bates was awarded the C.B.E. in 1973 and died in January 1974.

Have you ever cried from laughing too hard?

Absurd and hilarious, H.E. Bates introduces you to the strangest family you're ever likely to meet. A tax officer is sent to their house to collect overdue taxes, only to find himself thrown into their somewhat chaotic, but extremely loving and fun life. Set up with the daughter, he throws away his old life to join theirs. Wonderfully written, humorous and kind, one to be read when you're feeling down, or if you're outside enjoying a summer day - best enjoyed with an iced drink and a picnic blanket. H.E. Bates is sure bet for an excellent read - I have read eight novels by Bates now, and have yet to be disppointed.

Fifties British humor

Now a BBC video, the Larkin family rollick through Britain of the '50's. I think you have to be both an Anglophile and addicted to out-of-print British
authors--both of which am I!--to enjoy this. Nothing less like Angela Thirkell can be thought of--these are the adventures of the Lower Class.
And highly enjoyable they are.

You don't know what you're missing

I first read The Darling Buds of May about thirty years ago. Recently BBC added some episodes and turned it into a series starring David Jason, which was acknowledged as the very best of British Comnedy. Incidentally, Catherine Zeta Jones got her big TV break in this series as the beautiful Larkin daughter.
If you get a chance to get hold of a copy of H.E.Bates classic tale of Pop Larkin and his family, you should do so, just for the joy of reading something that is so funny it will split your sides.
