Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (Signet Classics), by Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass's dramatic autobiographical account of his early life as a slave in America.

Born into a life of bondage, Frederick Douglass secretly taught himself to read and write. It was a crime punishable by death, but it resulted in one of the most eloquent indictments of slavery ever recorded. His gripping narrative takes us into the fields, cabins, and manors of pre-Civil War plantations in the South and reveals the daily terrors he suffered as a slave.

Written more than a century and a half ago by an African-American who went on to become a famous orator, U.S. minister to Haiti, and leader of his people, this timeless classic still speaks directly to our age. It is a record of savagery and inhumanity that goes far to explain why America still suffers from the great injustices of the past.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-This classic text in both American literature and American history is read by Pete Papageorge with deliberation and simplicity, allowing the author's words to bridge more than 160 years to today's listeners. Following a stirring preface by William Lloyd Garrison (who, nearly 20 years after he first met Douglass, would himself lead the black troops fighting from the North in the Civil War), the not-yet-30-year-old author recounts his life's story, showing effective and evocative use of language as well as unflinchingly examining many aspects of the Peculiar Institution of American Slavery. Douglass attributes his road to freedom as beginning with his being sent from the Maryland plantation of his birth to live in Baltimore as a young boy. There, he learned to read and, more importantly, learned the power of literacy. In early adolescence, he was returned to farm work, suffered abuse at the hands of cruel overseers, and witnessed abuse visited on fellow slaves. He shared his knowledge of reading with a secret "Sunday school" of 40 fellow slaves during his last years of bondage. In his early 20's, he ran away to the North and found refuge among New England abolitionists. Douglass, a reputed orator, combines concrete description of his circumstances with his own emerging analysis of slavery as a condition. This recording makes his rich work available to those who might feel encumbered by the printed page and belongs as an alternative in all school and public library collections.

Review
“This narrative contains many affecting incidents, many passages of great eloquence and power…Who can read [it], and be insensible to its pathos and sublimity?”—William Lloyd Garrison

“He experienced…the tyranny and circumscription of an ambitious human being who was classified as real estate.”—W.E.B. DuBois

From the Publisher
This dramatic autobiography of the early life of an American slave was first published in 1845, when its young author had just achieved his freedom. Douglass' eloquence gives a clear indication of the powerful principles that led him to become the first great African-American leader in the United States.

for they allow us to gain a better understanding of how far our society has come
By Jayah
This autobiography was assigned to me when I was a junior in high school. Three years later, as a sophomore in college, I was asked to read the book again for my class on Black Thought and Literature. I wish that I had taken the time to slow down and analyze Frederick Douglass' narrative from a literal, analytical, and figurative perspective. Had I done that the first time around—as opposed to treating the book as another required reading that I needed to speed-read through—I believe that my understanding would have been more in-depth and meaningful. The emotion and conviction with which the author writes is not only poetic and moving, but captivating as well. The imagery, combined with Douglass' views on religion's role in the enslavement of black bodies, masterfully paints a story that (in combination with other narratives) has, unfortunately, been lost throughout time. In fact, many Black writers during this period refused to publish their experiences for fear that they will be caught and returned to slavery. In other cases, some writers used pen names to add some anonymity to their experiences. Nevertheless, such works should be cherished and valued; for they allow us to gain a better understanding of how far our society has come, and how much more needs to be done to ensure a future where everyone is equal (in the truest sense of the word).

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
By BJH
The Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs related the life and hardships of one young girl through adulthood. It relates how the slaves were thought of (as nothing but someone to live and serve the white people) Their lives were dependent on the white owners and this girl, with the help of her family, hid out for 7 long years to avoid the advances of her white doctor owner and his jealous wife and family who refused to sell her or give her freedom. Through the long years of hiding in her grandma's attic and then the chance to be smuggled to Boston. Even living in the North she had the fear of being caught and returned to the South. She raised her family by herself but still had the fear of her old master taking even her children away from her. This is a different insight on the life of the slave and is very interesting and well told.

New Perspective
By Amazon Customer
Refreshing and eye opening. Douglass spares no details on the cruelty and evilness of slavery. Interestingly, Douglass focuses just as much on the impact slavery had on the psychological being of the slave owner as he does the impact slavery had on the slaves themselves. Do yourself a favor and read this narrative. You will not regret it.

The Wealth and Poverty of Nations: Why Some Are So Rich and Some So Poor, by David S. Landes

"Readers cannot but be provoked and stimulated by this splendidly iconoclastic and refreshing book."―Andrew Porter, New York Times Book Review

The Wealth and Poverty of Nations is David S. Landes's acclaimed, best-selling exploration of one of the most contentious and hotly debated questions of our time: Why do some nations achieve economic success while others remain mired in poverty? The answer, as Landes definitively illustrates, is a complex interplay of cultural mores and historical circumstance. Rich with anecdotal evidence, piercing analysis, and a truly astonishing range of erudition, The Wealth and Poverty of Nations is a "picture of enormous sweep and brilliant insight" (Kenneth Arrow) as well as one of the most audaciously ambitious works of history in decades.

For the paperback edition, Landes has written a new epilogue, in which he takes account of Asian financial crisises and the international tension between overconfidence and reality. Maps

Amazon.com Review
Professor David S. Landes takes a historic approach to the analysis of the distribution of wealth in this landmark study of world economics. Landes argues that the key to today's disparity between the rich and poor nations of the world stems directly from the industrial revolution, in which some countries made the leap to industrialization and became fabulously rich, while other countries failed to adapt and remained poor. Why some countries were able to industrialize and others weren't has been the subject of much heated debate over the decades; climate, natural resources, and geography have all been put forward as explanations--and are all brushed aside by Landes in favor of his own controversial theory: that the ability to effect an industrial revolution is dependent on certain cultural traits, without which industrialization is impossible to sustain. Landes contrasts the characteristics of successfully industrialized nations--work, thrift, honesty, patience, and tenacity--with those of nonindustrial countries, arguing that until these values are internalized by all nations, the gulf between the rich and poor will continue to grow.

From Publishers Weekly
Landes (Revolution in Time), Harvard professor emeritus of history, undertakes an economic and cultural history of the world during the past five centuries. His well-written, sometimes witty analysis is the kind of work one wants to pause over and reflect upon at each chapter before moving ahead. Landes's principal argument is that the richest nations continue to prosper while poorer nations lag behind because of their relative ability or inability to exploit science, technology and economic opportunity. In every case?from ancient China to modern Japan?he maintains this is largely the result of national attitudes about a myriad of cultural factors. Landes traces the story of England's industrial revolution and America's system of mass production as indicators of the West's superiority over the rest of the world. Some of his historical illustrations are thought-provoking: for example, the importance of air conditioning to the development of the New South in the U.S. and the impact of a lifetime of eating with chopsticks on the manual dexterity of Asia's microprocessing workers. Most of all, Landes stresses the importance of cultural values, such as a predisposition for hard work, open-mindedness and a commitment to democracy, in determining a nation's course toward wealth and power.

From Library Journal
Harvard professor emeritus of history Landes argues that for the last thousand years, Western civilizationAwith its knowledge, techniques, and political and social ideologiesAhas been "the prime mover of development and modernity" and that countries such as Japan have become rich because they emulated the West. I'm nearly done with this book and have to say ...
By Bill
I'm nearly done with this book and have to say, it's an eye-opener. There are far more barriers to prosperity than meets the eye, but most of them have to do with cultural mores and customs. Prosperity come from the rigorous application of the concept of nations of laws, not men, and the state of mind of a country's citizens - a state of mind that can be nurtured or quashed completely by government. Sadly, America seems to be sliding more and more into the abyss that is a third world culture and mindset.

Extremely interesting and reads well!

I used this book in a class at my college. As a Computer Engineering major it's not always easy to dig into a long humanities book, but Landes's points are extremely interesting and tell the history of how Nation's came to be powerful or not based on a variety of factors. A great read overall!

One of the best books I've ever read
By Judy C.
One of the best books I've ever read. It's difficult to see how one person could have written a book that is so expansive and covers so much material in depth. Absolutely fascinating. Eviscerates some of the more politically correct critics. His chapter on why China, despite some very important inventions, never became a power house. Very insightful and reasonable analysis. Very readable. Good writing. If you're thinking about this book versus something from Niall Ferguson, who writes on similar topics, choose Landes. You wont be disappointed.

Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, by Dorothy Allison

Bastard Out of Carolina, nominated for the 1992 National Book Award for fiction, introduced Dorothy Allison as one of the most passionate and gifted writers of her generation. Now, in Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, she takes a probing look at her family's history to give us a lyrical, complex memoir that explores how the gossip of one generation can become legends for the next.

Illustrated with photographs from the author's personal collection, Two or Three Things I Know for Sure tells the story of the Gibson women -- sisters, cousins, daughters, and aunts -- and the men who loved them, often abused them, and, nonetheless, shared their destinies. With luminous clarity, Allison explores how desire surprises and what power feels like to a young girl as she confronts abuse.

As always, Dorothy Allison is provocative, confrontational, and brutally honest. Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, steeped in the hard-won wisdom of experience, expresses the strength of her unique vision with beauty and eloquence.

From Publishers Weekly
Allison's much-praised novel Bastard Out of Carolina was inspired by her childhood in Greenville, S.C., but in this memoir, adapted from a performance piece, she cuts even closer to the bone. "We don't have a family Bible?" the author's fourth-grade self asks her aunt. "Child, some days we don't even have a family," comes the response. If Allison suffered horrors, notably rape by her stepfather when she was five, she has transmuted pain into stories, gaining control with maturity. Indeed, her title prefaces several hard-won aphorisms she uses to counterpoint her memories: "No one is as hard as my uncles had to pretend to be." Her mother was a beauty, as was her sister, but Dorothy, smart and plain, felt a legacy of ugliness, one she shook off slowly as her feminism and her heart led her to lesbian relationships, often painful, finally rewarding. She is now, in her 40s, a new mother, and her stories?and life?are a triumph of love over cruelty. Read it aloud and savor the rhythms. Photos not seen by PW. Author tour.

From Library Journal
Allison (Bastard Out of Carolina, LJ 3/1/92) is a poet, essayist, and novelist, but in all these she is a storyteller. For her, stories are not simply creations but the very things that create us. Resounding with a familiarity of the intimate turned universal, this brief memoir recounts the episodes and people of Allison's life who created her and her own re-creation of herself. Often painful and mean, the stories are never bitter or despairing because of Allison's ability to move beyond, if not transform, the meaningless cruelty of life. Written as a performance piece, the cadence of the prose reverberates in the head and begs to be read out loud: "Two or three things I know for sure, and one is that I would rather go naked than wear the coat the world has made for me." With this retelling, Allison remakes that coat in her own image and leaves readers waiting for more stories. Highly recommended. [A BOMC and Quality Paperback selection.]?Eric Bryant, "Library Journal.

From Booklist
Adapted from a performance piece, Allison's little memoir sifts through old family photos that capture a childhood filled with a "white trash" girl's recollections of love, hate, revenge, rural Southern poverty, beatings, incest, and women whose hard eyes betrayed their broken dreams and lives. It also writhes and screams in pain, need, and outrage. By contrast, shafts of sudden insight illuminate it, so that it dances and belly laughs and proclaims its multifaceted discoveries of the two or three things of its title, discoveries such as "What it means to have no loved version of your life but the one you make" and that "Change, when it comes, cracks everything open." The 96-page tapestry of remembrances both bright and muted compresses the loss, lust, rape, rage, and love from which Allison fashioned her acclaimed Bastard Out of Carolina and, like the novel, shows a heroine--in this case, Allison herself--determined to transcend an anguished childhood and celebrate life with stories of and for survival. This book changed my life.
By wlngtofight
Among the hundreds or thousands of books that I have read, there remain only two that I can say this about. (The other is _The Color Purple_.) _Two or Three Things..._ is powerfully written. It is beautiful in the same way that it is to discover that someone's cancer has gone into remission. It is dark, it is almost tragic, and yet it is triumphant; I know of few authors who can pull this off, and none so well as Dorothy Allison.
For anyone who has faced or is facing serious adversity in their lives, be it from poverty, sexaul abuse, or anything else, especially for anyone who has gotten through it but not overcome it (you know what your 'it' is): this book will change your life, as well. I have learned a great deal from Dorothy Allison, and I am much the better for it.
Two or three things I know for sure, and one of them is that when I chose life, it was mostly because of this book.

A VITAL AND INSPIRING PIECE OF ORAL HISTORY
By Larry L. Looney
For those of you who have read Dorothy Allison's amazing, moving novel BASTARD OUT OF CAROLINA, this book is the bridge between the fiction of that work and the reality of Dorothy's life -- and even without BASTARD as a reference, this is an immensely powerful work.
TWO OR THREE THINGS I KNOW FOR SURE was originally intended as a one-woman stage presentation -- I can only imagine, after reading this slim volume, how powerful that must have been. Allison's writing talents are incredible -- she conveys the frustration, and especially the pain, of growing up sexually abused in the American South, the ignorance and poverty, the feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, in a very real way. It would be difficult to read this book and NOT get angry at what she endured, at the way women in general were treated. The inspiring thing is that she determined to rise above it in the only way she knew how -- by literally re-inventing her own life. Comparing the process of doing this to the telling of a story, she makes it understandable even to those who are not familiar with the courage required by abuse victims to make the transition to being survivors.
Incest and abuse tear families apart and can destroy lives. There's a very revealing story that she tells about looking through old photographs, first with her mom, then with other female family members. There's a palpable reluctance on their part to name everyone they see in the photos -- it's as if the people there don't exist outside the pictures, their lives being so damaged that they have literally disappeared. The subconscious protects us -- we remember what we can handle, when we can handle it.
On p.3, Dorothy makes a statement about 'retelling' her life as a story, re-inventing it in order to hold the pain and cast it off. She says: 'Two or three things I know for sure, and one of them is what it means to have no loved version of your life but the one you made.' The abuse victim can't depend on anyone else to reshape and rebuild what has been broken -- those on the outside can help and support, but only the object of the abuse has the power to decide to choose life as a survivor instead of a victim.
Sexual abuse and incest are extremely uncomfortable topics -- but they occur with greater frequency in our society than most people can or will admit -- and ignoring these painful issues will NOT make them go away. Only by speaking out can courageous survivors like Dorothy Allison give hope and encouragement to those who have yet to take that first important step on the road to healing.
This is an honest and well-written book -- and a moving and important one.

Dorothy Allison sure knows how to write!
By A Customer
The writing in Dorothy Allison's TWO OR THREE THINGS I KNOW FOR SURE has such a razor edge you'll want to protect your fingers as you hold the book. With unwavering honesty -- and with a somtimes suprising attitude toward the terrible events that have shaped her life -- Allison deftly avoids the two traps so common to pieces of this kind. There is no whining in this book, and there's no smug tone of "but just look at me now" either. Allison comes from a long line of women who have lived difficult, often unhappy lives, but she never condescends to apologize for any of these women. Rather, she understands -- and brings to life for the reader -- the deeply-buried strength and courage that so often these days is interpreted as weakness or lack of imagination. Allison's story is fascinating, peopled by characters who ring as true as our own families (sometimes to devasatatingly personal effect). But it is Allison's harshly poetic prose, even above the subject matter, that makes this book soar. The writing is simple, never showy, and so focused that it seems at times a magnifying glass held at just the proper angle to catch the rays of a white-hot desert sun. The words burn into us, cleansing and scarring at the same time, and when we turn the final page we know that we've just experienced something increasingly rare these days: the truth

By Scott C. Dreger
We heard Eric Worre say that he had listened to this 100 times in 3-years and over 300 times to date, so we thought it would be good. He was right! It has some GREAT information to share not only for business but personally as well. You won't regret getting this even thought it has been around for awhile.

Great Listenign
By D. Bell
Jim Rohn is easy to listen to except for his whiny voice at times. I would have rated this presentation 5-stars were it not for the drawn out exaggerations at the end of his sentences. Nevertheless, his principles are easy to understand and he gives many applicable examples. These CD's are library quality, meaning, I will listen to them many times over. Sometimes I have a hard time maintaining motivation and coming up with new ideas and this material was perfect to help me in those areas. Highly recommended.

Platinum-plated five star space opera Eden
By 2theD
When I first searched for Alastair Reynolds' books to read after read the Revelation Space series (Revelation Space, Redemption Ark and Absolution Gap) I mistakenly typed The Perfect instead of the above title. Little did I know that when I would finally pick up the book it would turn out to be just that - perfect. I've read many SF novels of Reynolds already as well as his British compatriots' works of Iain Banks, Neal Asher, Peter F. Hamilton and Ken MacLeod. A number of those, too, I gave 5-stars but I if had the choice now I would give the those other 5-star books (with the exception of The Algebraist) a mere 5 silver stars while adorning The Prefect with 5 platinum stars. It's just THAT good.

From page 1 until page 502 (in the British edition I picked up in December 2008) the plot is wonderfully viscous which manages to slide the reader through an easy 100+ pages in one sitting and leaves you with a sense of awe at the depth and detail Reynolds serves up. When you're deep in the book you tend to let some details drift off but Reynolds will always smack them in your face just when you begin to think that he had forgotten to backtrack to include everyone and everything in the preceding pages. That simple facet of the book kept my blood pumping, as did the shiny facets of life in the Glimmer Band high above the planet of Yellowstone (part of the Revelation Space series and a key part to the novel Chasm City).

Now come to the cast involved in this menagerie of space, technology, artificial intelligence, orbital abodes, data bandwidth, police protocol and creeping evil. Dreyfus seems to be a clean-cut prefect with a dark history but still seeks justice for crimes committed along with his human deputy Thalia and hyperpig deputy Sparver. The determination and formidable pride in service displayed by these prefects is quite something to be proud of, yourself, to be involved in. Opposing this good is the necessary evil coming from Aurora and her prefect mole Gaffney. Is what they want so evil in the end? Are the means employed to satisfy this ending justified? And the ultimate question is how Dan Sylveste and Lascaille (both of Revelation Space fame) and the Clockmaker all fit into this vast, viscous plot.

superb
By Thomas D. Gulch
I can't add much to the excellent review by bluesfan with the exception that this is indeed a wonderful novel. I have been reading Alastair's books since the first revelation space novel came out some years ago and have read everything he has written. He has a gift to get the reader so emotionally involved in the novel that you start cursing outloud at the protagonist while reading the book, leading some in one's family to think they have gone daft.
I bought all of the revelation space series in hardback, and then bought them again in paperback. Along with Banks and Asher, Reynolds is writing some of the best space opera and science fiction that has ever been written.
The late Poet laureate of science fiction, the much beloved Arthur C. Clarke, has seemingly had his torch picked up by Alastair. Good going.Keep it coming.

Vertebrate morphology supreme
By Howard Schneider
This university textbook on vertebrate morphology is clearly written and is actually suitable for the general reader with no experience in the subject. Basic concepts such as morphological concepts, phylogeny, paleontology and evolution are discussed at the start of the book. A good overview is presented regarding theories of chordate emergence. Early vertebrates are then presented, starting with a reconstruction of a conodont animal. Chapters on biological design (ie, what adaptations are actually possible) and embryology then follow. Chapters describing and comparing organ systems in various vertebrates then follow, and include the integument (ie, skin), skeletal system, muscular system, respiratory system, circulatory system, digestive system, urogenital system, endocrine system, nervous system and sensory organs.

very good, not so easy to read
By the Penguin
a student of vertebrate comparative anatomy will find almost everything he needs in this book. the writings are clear, the drawings excellent, the topics are all very thoroughly covered. it gives not just dry facts but also highly stimulating explanations, within a broad evolutionary context. why "only" 4 stars? well, it is not so easy to navigate through, to the point of being not well organized. you will have to look hard for what you need, especially if you are a novice. it might have been a better book still, where it differently organized, but, all in all, an excellent and important, up to date textbook

Good improvement from last edition
By Taphonomy
This is the book that I used to teach comparative vertebrate anatomy. The previous major flaw of the book was the many inaccuracies in the figures. However many of these appear to be changed. All in all this book is a good book to reference to for a variety of questions about vertebrates. Not the easiest of books to wade through for a beginner but Kardong for the most part does a good job in explanations and descriptions for a book of this level

Excellent
By Douglas A. Lefelhocz
You'll find one of the simpler introductions to fuzzy logic here. Unlike many more technical fuzzy logic books, much of the symbolism used gets explained. The diagrams of projection and cylindrical extension also help understand these notions in an intuitive manner. The book does have a slight error in that it claims a proof of a general theorem through the use of a single numerical example. But, the plethora of simple examples in this books make it a pleasure and an ease to read. You'll also find encoruagement if you have doubts about pursuing this field, as Niimura indicates that Zadeh had his original paper on fuzzy sets finished for two years prior to its publication, and it only got published, because he edited the journal.

Breezy Intro to Fuzzy Logic
By Ray Burkholder
I was impressed by the fact that most symobology used in the book is defined during its first use. There are a few symbols like 'sup' on page 38 that I'm still unclear about.

There are five basic chapters in the book:

1 Introduction

2 Fuzzy Set Theory

3 Fuzzy Relations

4 Fuzzy Reasoning

5 Fuzzy Logic Control

Chapter 1 is a brief two page intro to the concept. The chapter on Fuzzy Set Theory gets into the basics. I've read the descriptions of Fuzzy Logic in MathLab's Fuzzy Logic module and so was prepared for most what is in this chapter. As such, I'm still somewhat unclear as how Cartesion Products and Extension Principles are applicable to the whole concept of Fuzzy Logic.

In the chapter on Fuzzy Relations, further use of extensions is used along with the properties of composition. Simple matrix math is used in some cases to arrive at results in some of the examples.

The fourth chapter, which is about Fuzzy Reasoning, includes reasoning based upon Mamdani's Direct Method, Takagi & Sugeno's Fuzzy Modelling, and the Simplified Method. It is in this chapter where the earlier mechanisms of composition are utilizied. Defuzzification, which is final step of any fuzzy logic process, is lightly described with a brief reference to the standard centroid calculation.

The final chapter is light on formulas, and offers up a high level description of the superiority of fuzzy logic over PID controllers, and how the former can help the latter obtain better control in some situations.

After having taken a first read of this book, I'll have to go through it again to see if I can better relate Fuzzy Relations to the remainder of the book. In addition, now that I've got a better grasp on fuzzy symbology, I believe I'm ready to move on to the more heavy duty books of the subject area.

Best intro to fuzzy logic
By Ntsika Msimang
One thing frustrating with fuzzy logic books is that they are full of weird notation and have little or no adequate examples to illustrate the concepts. You won't find that problem with Tanaka. He takes you by the hand and shows you all the basics using easy to understand language. He provides enough examples that illustrate every concept. This book is very readable and I am willing to bet that an average high school student can find it accessible. It's that good.

The #1New York Times Bestseller
A National Book AwardFinalist
A 2017 Michael L. Printz Honor Book

The dazzling new novel from Nicola Yoon, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything (in theaters May 19 2017!),will have you falling in love with Natasha and Daniel as they fall in love with each other!

Natasha: I’m a girl who believes in science and facts. Not fate. Not destiny. Or dreams that will never come true. I’m definitely not the kind of girl who meets a cute boy on a crowded New York City street and falls in love with him. Not when my family is twelve hours away from being deported to Jamaica. Falling in love with him won’t be my story.

Daniel:I’ve always been the good son, the good student, living up to my parents’ high expectations. Never the poet. Or the dreamer. But when I see her, I forget about all that. Something about Natasha makes me think that fate has something much more extraordinary in store—for both of us.

The Universe:Every moment in our lives has brought us to this single moment. A million futures lie before us. Which one will come true?

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of November 2016: Over the course of a single day in New York City, two teenagers who have nothing in common randomly meet and fall in love. Now I know that sounds absurdly clich, but somehow in Nicola Yoon’s hands, it doesn’t read that way. Natasha is a practical young woman trying to keep her family from being deported in a matter of hours. Daniel is a poet at heart, but on this day he is dutifully making good on his familial commitment to a college interview. The two are inexplicably drawn to each other and somehow their paths keep converging. The novel is told in alternating points of view, and one of the special touches of Yoon’s book are the chapters narrated by people who are unintentionally part of Natasha and Daniel’s story, mirroring our almost spooky interconnectedness. The Sun is Also a Star is a thought-provoking story of possibility, fate, and the illogical beauty of love. --Seira Wilson, The Amazon Book Review

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up—It is Natasha's last day in New York City, where she has lived for 10 years. Her family, living as undocumented immigrants in a small Brooklyn apartment, are being deported to Jamaica after her father's arrest for drunk driving. Natasha is scouring the city for a chance to stay in the United States legally. She wants the normal teen existence of her peers. Meanwhile, poetic Daniel is on his way to an interview as part of his application process to Yale. He is under great pressure to get in because his parents (who emigrated from South Korea) are adamant that he become a doctor. Events slowly conspire to bring the two leads together. When Daniel and Natasha finally meet, he falls in love immediately and convinces her to join him for the day. They tell their stories in alternating chapters. Additional voices are integrated into the book as characters interact with them. Both relatable and profound, the bittersweet ending conveys a sense of hopefulness that will resonate with teens. VERDICT This wistful love story will be adored by fans of Rainbow Rowell's Eleanor & Park and by those who enjoyed the unique narrative structure of A.S. King's Please Ignore Vera Dietz.—Kristin Anderson, Columbus Metropolitan Library System, OH

Warmed My Tiny Heart
By Abby
"It's like knowing all the words to a song but still finding them beautiful and surprising."

And that's this book more or less in a nutshell. I knew exactly what was going to happen in this book. You know, too. These two crazy kids were going to fall in love, and it would change their lives forever. But the journey they take to get there... it's still awe inspiring.

How does Nicola Yoon even do this? Because when I read the blurb for this book I was not impressed. However, having enjoyed Everything, Everything I took a chance on it. Boy, am I glad I did. I think The Sun is Also a Star exceeds its predecessor. Yoon has an amazing talent for telling beautiful, heartwarming stories using lovely prose that is in no way fussy or overworked.

We follow the tale of Daniel and Natasha, two strangers who fate seems determined to push together. Daniel is the son of Korean immigrants who want him to go to Yale and become a doctor-- and they aren't really asking. Daniel does not want to displease his parents, but he is a natural poet who finds meaning in words rather than science. Natasha is the exact opposite. She doesn't even believe in love, much less love from first sight. Natasha's father is a failed actor, and the resentment she feels towards him has made her abandon any thought of have passion or dreams. The day Natasha and Daniel meet is a pivotal point for both of them. Daniel has an interview for Yale. Natasha is about to be deported. One day with someone can't possibly be enough to fall in love with them... right?

Even though I gave this book 5 stars, and it deserved it, I still can't help but nitpick a little. There are a lot of perspective shifts in this book, some in first person and others in third, and sometimes that interrupted the flow of the story for me. I also thought the very ending was a bit reminiscent of Yoon's first book.

If you're a fan of charming romances, pick this one up. You won't regret it.

Very moving and thought provoking.

[[VIDEOID:a881308408229d27657eee373d667c14]] This was an impulse buy! HA I read somewhere it was good-so I bought it!
Did not realize it was young adult. But that is OK. It was a quick read. And I kind of got giddy remembering some of those teen feelings.
But in all seriousness- I don't care how OLD you are or if you are left or right. It is an amazing book. It touches on some very deep themes, by giving you a glimpse into the lives of several different characters. The two main characters are Natasha (her and her family being deported) and Daniel (2nd best Korean son) both living in New York City. The majority of the book takes place in once day. I don't want to give a lot away-but I feel like Yoon used the theme of teen romance to bring on some big topics-like life, dealth, family dynamics, immigration and racism. Fabulously done.

In my video I read the opening inspiring quotes and one "chapter"-Daniel, and one Natasha.
"Chapters" : This book isn't really chapters. It switches from each person's perspective 1-2 pages. Another great reason I love this book-it is unconventional and shows young adults a different way writing style.

PS- I sobbed uncontrollably at the end!!!

A lovely, loverly story
By Trudie Barreras
There are important books, relevant books, thrilling and horrifying books, However, only rarely have I read a book for which the most appropriate adjective that occurs to me is LOVELY, or perhaps, to quote from a song in a musical, “loverly”. Both these descriptors perfectly fit “The Sun Is Also a Star” by Nicola Yoon.

Yoon has created an intricate interweaving of those seemingly random small events in life which are utterly pivotal, and it is fascinating to watch the pattern develop. The narrative is balanced between the poetic Daniel, who does not want to follow the life-plan envisioned by his Korean parents and become a doctor; and the scientific Natasha who is appalled at the circumstances which will force her undocumented family, herself included, to be deported back to Jamaica. The artistry with which the author dances these two diverse personalities together in their romantic encounter is alternately poignant, amusing and deeply touching. Interjected in the narrative are other little vignettes which are not only explanatory but also serve to support the basic premise that even apparently insignificant interactions and encounters may indeed shape destiny.

I am philosophically and spiritually deeply in tune with Yoon’s wonderful hypothesis, expressed by Daniel during one of his conversations with Natasha, that the “dark matter” which makes up 27% of the Universe and holds everything together is in fact love, and that the highest aspiration of humankind is to value, cherish and express that love in whatever way they can. The characterizations, as well as the descriptions of places and actions, are authentic and extremely moving. This book is real, and I found it extremely – well, lovely!

Postcolonial Comics: Texts, Events, Identities (Routledge Research in Postcolonial Literatures)From Routledge

This collection examines new comic-book cultures, graphic writing, and bande dessinée texts as they relate to postcolonialism in contemporary Anglophone and Francophone settings. The individual chapters are framed within a larger enquiry that considers definitive aspects of the postcolonial condition in twenty-first-century (con)texts.

The authors demonstrate that the fields of comic-book production and circulation in various regional histories introduce new postcolonial vocabularies, reconstitute conventional "image-functions" in established social texts and political systems, and present competing narratives of resistance and rights. In this sense, postcolonial comic cultures are of particular significance in the context of a newly global and politically recomposed landscape.

This volume introduces a timely intervention within current comic-book-area studies that remain firmly situated within the "U.S.-European and Japanese manga paradigms" and their reading publics. It will be of great interest to a wide variety of disciplines including postcolonial studies, comics-area studies, cultural studies, and gender studies.
