This is a very informative and enlightening book. It is easy and fun to read and has a lot to take away.

The topic is contemporary and just in time. While we have entered into a digital age, mobile economy becomes a significant game changer for business and life. It is easy to see that but it is hard to see why. The book offers answers. There are 9 forces: context, location, time, saliency, crowdedness, trajectory, social dynamics, weather, and tech mix. The book delves into great details in discussing how each one of the nine forces work in shaping the mobile economy. My personal favorite part of the nine forces is the "social dynamics". Consumers are different in terms of their social circles and groups, so do their behaviors. And, mobile commerce changes the way consumers receive and process information and the way they make decisions. "triples are better than doubles, and couples are the worst...", I couldn't help but laughing.

Prof. Ghose is a prolific researcher. The book is an condense version of all insights from his research over the years. It took him years of hard work in research to gain all of these insights, but hours for us (readers) to learn all of those. I always find more enjoyable to eat delicious food at dinner when I don't have to prepare for the dinner. Prof. Ghose did all of the cooking and we can just sit and eat, and enjoy. I don't think anyone can hope for a more rewarding journey in learning than this!

In classroom, the book is suitable for all students, undergraduate students, MBA students, and doctoral students. On bookshelf, it is a keeper for future references. I highly recommend the book.

It is “the” book on mobile economy! A truly amazing and insightful book. Reading it is a beautiful and enjoyable journey. A perfect example of incorporating cutting-edge academic research into practical business applications.

Two features make this book outstanding. First, Location, Location, Location, this book focuses on one of the most important breakthrough of tech + business models: the increasing pervasiveness of location-acquisition technologies has dramatically changed how firms reach their consumers. A fundamental question answered by this book is: How can firms take advantage of the recent advancement of mobile and location technologies and revolutionize the nature of how businesses operate? It convincingly shows that mobile economy isn’t about changing a specific industry, but rather changing the landscape of social media, consumer searching, advertising, branding, etc. This book has everything you want to know about mobile economy, and present them in a deep, persuasive, and interesting way.

Second, this book provides original, sound, and rigorous thinking on how to tackle important questions in mobile economy. Results and answers are important, but how to reach the results and answers is equally important to companies, researchers, as well as general audience. Drawing inferences about the causal effect of a business innovation/strategy in mobile economy is quite challenging. This book successfully shows the effectiveness of conducting randomized controlled experiment to uncover and quantify the causal effects in different real-world business settings. It is such an enjoyable experience reading the book! No matter who you are – a marketer, an entrepreneur, a student, or a consumer – as long as you are interested in the unprecedented opportunities that mobile devices bring to our economy, this book is just in time for you.
The book presents the most surprising, compelling, and actionable academic findings in the past decade in an interesting and accessible way, and everyone could gain valuable insights from many different facets of the mobile ecosystem. It illustrates the psychological and economic motivations underlying consumers’ contradictory behavior, and how these incentives together with technology advances shape the mobile economy. Good coverage in reasonable depth

Great things sometimes really do come in small packages. I confess I had my doubts when I picked up this book: it seems very small to actually cover the fundamentals of a topic, any topic. But it surprised me. In only about 250 pages, it succeeds in covering how wireless data networking - aka 802.11, or WiFi - actually works.
There is even a professional level of detail. When it comes down to it, what makes wireless different is the use of a radio instead of a physical wire. That means, for those familiar with the OSI Model, the differences are all in the bottom two layers, the Physical and the Data Link layers. As an effect of using a radio, of course, anyone with an appropriate antenna can listen in, and maybe join the conversation if they wish, which makes security both important and a little trickier to implement.
Now you know the focus of this book. To make sure that the reader understands the data network wireless connects to, as well as to provide a good comparison, the authors start with a review of Ethernet and how the data is exchanged over it, and on out to the Internet. From there, they patiently take you through how WiFi does the same thing, only with a radio instead of a Cat 5 cable. The explanation of how the Physical layer works in this environment is not as long as its thoroughness makes it appear; though less that 25 pages, you will finish that chapter with a decent understanding of the differences in connection establishment and management among the various flavors of WiFi: 802.11, 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. These standards use different means of manipulating the radio waves, with effects (I think) not unlike the differences in data passage among Ethernet and Token Ring. If you're going to use a technology in your network, you need to be aware of those differences, and you will get a deep enough level of understanding from this to either implement a reasonably simple network, or have the foundation - the fundamentals - with which to dig as deeply as you need. There are different means of protecting your wireless network form being used by just anyone, and (especially) from being used to access your wired network. That means you must consider both encryption and authentication, and the various means of achieving these goals is covered at the level of a knowledgeable user. You won't find mathematical representations of cryptographic algorithms here; this is a practical book for those who need to implement wireless, not those who need to design the protocol suite. A working-level knowledge is sufficient.
Of course, one of the big attractions of wireless is that you can move while you surf, so mobility by a user is covered, as well. Roaming causes a problem unique to a wireless network: adapting connectivity during a session. If all wireless nodes belong to the same IP network, roaming can be handled entirely at layer two, but you will find times when you need to separate wireless LAN segments into separate routing domains; mobility at layer three is a little more challenging, but can be done. Facilitating both roaming and the many types of communications on a converged network, how to handle Quality of Service (QoS) is covered, too.
Finally, designing and actually deploying a wireless network requires you to understand how the radio waves work, at least well enough to place the Access Points (APs) to provide the coverage you need with sufficient bandwidth for the users you will support. Conducting a good site survey matters, and so does planning for growth - both of which are addressed. In addition, the design section has some material to make you think about the impact of your wireless network on its surroundings. Remember, in a hospital, for instance, unwanted radio waves might have very bad side effects!
All told, this book is an excellent introduction for someone who needs to implement a wireless data network using current technology. You will probably find aspects to your network for which you'll have to dig a little deeper. That's the only reason I'm giving this 4 stars - I'm lazy enough to want it all in one place, even if the book gets pretty heavy.

Meat and Potatoes with plenty of gravy

I recently read the title "802.11 Wireless LAN Fundamentals" by Pejman Roshan and Jonathan Leary. ISBN: 1587050773. You've heard the saying that good things come in small packages. Well, this title reinforces that statement. The book is packed with information regarding 802.11 Wireless LAN's. Don't be thrown by the title into thinking that this book only covers the basics. In fact, this book covers the basics and much, much more.

The book starts off with fundamental concepts of Ethernet Technologies. Not enough to be a great Ethernet reference, but enough to refresh your memory or to get the flavor of Ethernet once again. The book then explains the essential concepts of Wireless LAN's. After some needed high level concepts are covered the book dives into the bits and bytes of Wireless networking, leaving nothing for the imagination. The physical layer details are covered extremely well in this book. There are great depictions that show the different modulation types, frame formats and field definitions of 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g.
An extremely important topic on Wireless security is cover better in this book than any other source that I've found. A chapter has been dedicated to the topic. The author's first breaks down the weaknesses in wireless networks then explain how to secure the Wireless network. This chapter is loaded with supporting diagrams and figures.
The other challenging topic of Roaming is covered in this book. The chapter goes into the protocol codes that allow mobility to be successful and the author's show a few ways in which mobility can be accomplished from a technical perspective.
QoS for 802.11, or 802.11e, is a great section pertaining to QoS in a shared media wireless environment. The chapter is a bit complex and allows some of the more advanced networking professionals to bite off as much as they can chew.
The book covers all the radio essentials that one would need to firmly grasp this technology without delving into the complex math behind it all.
The title wraps up with great examples of site survey and design considerations. The authors give sound advise on how to approach the deployment of a wireless network that will scale to meet the needs of future Wireless network growth.
With the help of the support glossary in the back, I'm much more versed on the smorgasbord of new acronyms and the technology itself, that Wireless LAN's have introduced to Networking community. The glossary makes for a great quick reference. What book would be complete without a good index. This book has a pretty good index that has most any wireless related acronym at your finger tips. Great for a quick find.
There are several figures, diagrams and tables in this book. Much more than what I've seen in most other books. The supporting figures, diagrams and tables help a great deal with sorting out the terms and concepts of this simple yet complex technology. The information in the book is mainly standards based and not much, if any, Cisco centric information. Which make this title valuable for anyone seeking to understand Wireless LAN's.
This book is best suited for any network professional at any level. There is something for everyone in this title. Sales Engineers will find this book invaluable as they are faced with the many tough questions and challenges from the inquisitive customer. Data Network Salesmen will benefit from this title by understanding what value Wireless networks can bring to a company and how to fit the needs of a company into a viable solution for customers.

At a total of 281 pages covering 10 chapters of material, this book is very compact, but every page is filled with relevant information.
The first chapter of the book quickly delves into Ethernet technologies - 802.3 ethernet frame formats, addressing, CSMA/CD, 10Mb,100Mb and 1000Mb.
The second and third chapters cover the physical and MAC layers of 802.11 technology extensively. Chapter 2 starts from service sets (IBSS,BSS and ESS),CSMA/CA and how it differs from CSMA/CD,and moves to 802.11 MAC layer operations. MAC layer operations include station connectivity - how 802.11 clients connect to the access point, power save operation and the different 802.11 frame formats.
Chapter 3 covers the physical layer of the 802.11 protocol - the sublayers, PMD (Physical Medium Dependant)and PLCP (Physical Layer Convergence Procedure); FHSS (Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum) and DSSS (Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) and the different modulation techniques used in 802.11,802.11a,802.11b and 802.11g.
Wireless LAN security is covered to a reasonable depth. The authors give a brief overview of encryption and then cover encryption in the 802.11 standard which is basically WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy). Authentication mechanisms - Open and Shared Key authentication and the security vulnerabilities in the 802.11 standard are discussed in detail.
One of the most important tasks during the deployment of a wireless network is the site survey. The decisions made during this phase are critical to the optimal performance of the WLAN.Chapter 8 points to the questions that must be asked during a site survey and the necessary tools required to successfully conduct a survey.
For a Ciscopress book this volume is not very Cisco-centric. There are few references to Cisco devices. The focus is vendor neutral, stressing the 802.11 standard above all.
From my point of view,this book is not targeted at helping the reader to pass any Cisco wireless certification exams. There are no cram sheets,questions, or hints. However, I believe the contents will go a long way in preparing readers for the new CWAP(Certified Wireless Analysis Professional) exam by Planet3 Wireless. This exam focuses on wireless LAN analysis - 802.11 physical layer technologies, MAC frames and the use of protocol analyzers.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to have a good understanding of what goes on behind the scenes on a WLAN.

Frank Bussey was the Director of Operations for the United States Golf Association and directed on-site operations for 23 United States Men's Open Golf Championships. "The building department can either be an ally or an opponent. It is always best to meet with the building department about your event early in the planning process.

That is worth repeating. It is always better to meet with the building department for your event sooner, rather than later.

Each area of the country is different and each building department has its’ own set of rules. While standard building codes exist, there can be codes specific to the local building department and it is better to be familiar with these at the outset. Pay particular attention to the building codes with regard to tent spacing. In some locales you have to provide a fire break after a number of tents in a row. You will need to know this before you sign off on the tent layout.


The building department should communicate its expectations. Talk to them about the site and what you plan to do. Take maps to leave with them. Have a meeting with all the department heads; create an agenda which explains the scope of the event. Ask help in making your event painless for everyone.

During the practice rounds at one event the building inspector came up to me and told me I had to move some tents in a corporate village. I knew the plans had been submitted well in advance which should have uncovered the problem which was raised. Upon further review at the building department, the inspector found the plans were submitted, but no one caught the spacing issue. In the end, no tents were moved. This reinforces the fact that even if you begin early, errors will occur.


If it is your fault, you have to ask the building inspectors for options. In almost all cases, something can be done to work around the problem. It may cost you money to solve the problem by either adding additional fire personnel or fire equipment.

The Fire Marshal will want to see the flame certificates for the tents as well as a list of hazardous materials used by the decorating company. This list might include the type of wood used in the walls or counters, the ceiling liner material, hard walls, stage lighting and paint. A map showing the location of all these items for quick review in the event something should happen should also be prepared and provided."

Mr. Bussey’s Operationally Speaking 3rd edition book is the premier book on strategic and operational management. I have been personally using the book in my sport management classes for over 10 years at Farmingdale State College and LIU Post for the past 2 years . The book has given our students an in depth knowledge to successfully have the capacity to run a major sporting event. Mr. Bussey’s planning, controlling, organizing and leading skills at the U.S. Open are a perfect image on how to run a sporting event. I would highly suggest any sport management class to use his great book.

Just to tell a few of you what this book has meant to my son and i.We first heard of jin shin in mayof 1999.philomena dooley and leyla wefalle,introduced my son and i in the middle of the airport..in nantucket.they were presenting a class the next morning..i said we would be ther .
my son has renal kidney failure,at 13 years of age.he is an absolute gem and has alot of spirit. after going to the class and realizing how good he looked and felt it was amazing..his blood pressure went way down and the bloat left his body he truly looked wonderful..we took the book home and read it like the bible it never leaves my bedside.main central makes my day function and we do the kidney flow on mike as much as possible dont forget he is 13(hahahah).we went for a five day treatment in boulder that words can not describe.we would like to go to arizona and have some more hands on..i think we could beat this kidney disease.with the likes of jin shin thank you may burmeister for bringing it to us

Extraordinary result from doing these hand positions

I am truly astounded by the calming, centering, grounding, steadying and relaxing benefits resulting from holding the hand positions described in this book. I have a natural calmness in my body I don't remember ever experiencing. My physical health is much better, sailing through a cold with minimal discomfort and no secondary issues. A sudden onset of hip/knee pain and unsteadiness was released over a 7 days period. Instead of worries about hip replacements, a lovely walk in the desert was enjoyed.

The explanations in the book of each position contains clear and easy to understand information for all levels of life: mental, emotional, physical, energetic and spiritual.

From the beginning of the book, the reader is given the simple practice of holding the fingers, an easy thing to do whenever the hands are free-reading emails, magazines, even books, watching tv, meditating, standing in line at the grocery store, at an office meeting, etc. Next comes the Main Central, again, easy to do sitting up or resting in bed. An excellent practice to gently fall asleep and for beginning the day in a state of calmness and peace. Also an excellent practice when one receives any kind of shocking news. I used this Jin Shin Jyutsu to calm the panic and fear mechanisms in the body (Triple Warmer, adrenals, etc) and support the Spleen after receiving some disturbing news. Combined with Tapas Acupressure Technique (tatlife.com) and/or Emotional Freedom Technique by Gary Craig and Donna Eden's Energy Medicine, the shock was released from the body, mind and heart, allowing me to go with the flow of creatively handling the situation with calmness and assurance. Even though no solution to the problem was found, I still felt unruffled and calm, somehow connected to the feeling/idea that all was well and eventually it would all work out nicely (and even if it did not, I would be fine instead of in fear for my survival).

The book goes to to describe what the authors call Safety Locks, how they work, what they do, how to free them up to allow natural healing energy to flow.

One does not have to know anything about energy medicine to follow this book nor have any special healing abilities. It is so simple, the very old and very young can be taught Jin Shin Jyutsu, as they can be taught and benefit from the other energy medicines mentioned above. One can hold these hand positions (called jumper cabling) on another person also. When this is done, both people receive the benefits.

The books states that the benefits are accumulative. I have noticed this to be true. The benefits seem to happen faster as time goes on. At first it was difficult to notice the pulse under each hand position, but after some days I noticed I could feel them. With patience, I noticed the pulses would balance and pulse at the same time and I felt calmer and smoother. Even if one can not feel the pulses described in the book, no worries. Just hold the positions for the few minutes instructed and one receives benefit.

I have become convinced over the years that blocked energy in its various forms (mental, emotional, physical, energetic and spiritual) was the cause of my suffering on many levels. The various energy medicines mentioned above unblock the energy and good health unfolds.

This book is a wonderful healing gift to humanity. Even if one can not afford to go to a Jin Shin practitioner (a wonderful healing experience reported by a friend), one can purchase this book and begin to feel better on all levels. It just takes some patience and practice. It is so amazingly easy to do.

The Healing is Within Your Hands

I had been bed-bound for a year, when I bought this book. It is laid out in a logical way, with clear instructions and pictures. When I needed to do a sequence I drew stick figures using red circles for right and green for left pressure points on recipe cards. It was easier to follow than the written step-by-step on a day to day basis. You can look up what to do by your symptoms OR by the type of emotional stress you've been thru - we are MIND+BODY+SPIRIT=all intertwined. Doing Jin Shin got me out of bed, and is balancing my body and mind! My last blood test was so balanced it was incredible/unbelievable. This book gives you what you need to heal/balance your body: addictions, cravings, pains, all manner of physical problems, headaches, itchy places, too hot, too cold, chronic fatigue, heart problems, lung problems, you name it, there is something you can do about it!

Nice and Quick

The book is perfect for someone who want to get a quick introduction to TRIZ and apply it directly in the same page! I have a friend who could benefit from this. I have some experience in TRIZ already.
The author gives nice examples of a particular technique of TRIZ. Applying TRIZ to TRIZ was a nice move. I did not enjoy too many examples from chemical domain though it is my own fault. The introduction does mention this. Needs an editor for the thought flow. I am waiting for version 2 of this book. The book tries to focus on creative solutions rather than TRIZ. For e.g. SCAMPER, SIT is also mentioned. I liked that

Intriguing and inspiring book!

This book made for a refreshing, memorable and intellectually stimulating read. I particularly remember a chapter in this book in which Brostow outlines principles of invention. This inspiring chapter has stayed with me and I wish to reread it. It is great that someone with his scientific background has taken the time to conceptualize and write an interdisciplinary book like this that can inspire artists, too. It left me wanting to read more about the relationship between principles of scientific and artistic design and invention from him in the future.

A very good introduction to methodical innovation. Too often innovation is perceived as something magical that requires almost genius-like levels of creativity and foresight. This book shows that everyone can develop innovative ideas, products and projects through the use of well established principles such as TRIZ and SCAMPER.
