I watched Mary Kay's friend on Good Morning America, Christina Dress wrote a book with Mary Kay called Mass With Mary: The Prison Years and it was a great read so I thought I'd read the book from Mary Kay and Villi. What a let down. This book is awful.

You've got to be kidding....

I hoped for at least a 'decent' read, and no such luck. This whole Letourneau thing has me a bit curious so I bought a couple of books on it...I picked a rotton book---that's all I can say. My review is a half a star, if that's possible. This book should be shelved for life. (Just an avid reader's opinion...but I do read quite a bit and usually find some merit in most books, just not this one.

Many Light Bulb Articles

Having read some articles in this textbook for class, I came across some readings that opened my mind to new ideas that I never considered.

For example, I never considered myself to be a religious person because I didn't want to be told how to live my life. However, after I read Loy's article in the textbook, I discovered that I did buy into a religion called market capitalism, and that I didn't think completely for myself, as I had previously thought. Unconsciously, market capitalism was telling me how to live (by keep working), how to percieve the world (by being competitive), and how much I was humanly worth (by the amount of money I made).

This textbook has many eye opening articles as the one mentioned above, and some of your light bulbs may get lit too.

About the Author
Dr. Mohammad (“Mo”) Iqbal, D.Sc., PE, SE, has over 40 years of experience as a civil and structural engineer. He is the co-author of Parking Structures: Planning, Design, Construction, Maintenance, and Repair, and has written numerous technical papers and magazine articles. Dr. Iqbal holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore, a master of science degree in civil engineering from Middle East Technical University, and a doctorate degree in civil engineering from Washington University at St. Louis.

Ali A. Iqbal, PE, has worked as a civil engineer since 2004. He holds a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from California State University, Sacramento, and a certificate of project management from California State University, East Bay. He is also a certified LEED Green Associate, an EnvisionTM Sustainability Professional (ENV SP), and a Sustainable Transportation Professional with Greenroads.

Prepared for the FE using this book and I passed. This book helps you to understand the exam and how to navigate the reference manual. If you have been out of school for a few years, I would recommend going over the basics before starting with this book.

For those ready to take on the FE exam

the problems in this book is good in familiarizing and preparing a person for the FE exam, however I believe this book is more beneficial to someone who has already fully preparared and has the fundamentals to take on the FE exam and wishes to refer or practice additional problems. For a person starting from scratch and is lacking the fundamentals and is looking for theory this is not the book to refer to. This book however is good in familiarizing a person on how to use the NCEES book.

About the Author

Ron Larson received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado in 1970. At that time he accepted a position with Penn State University, and he currently holds the rank of professor of mathematics at the university. Larson is the lead author of more than two dozen mathematics textbooks that range from sixth grade through calculus levels. Many of his texts, such as the tenth edition of his calculus text, are leaders in their markets. Larson is also one of the pioneers in the use of multimedia and the Internet to enhance the learning of mathematics. He has authored multimedia programs, extending from the elementary school through calculus levels. Larson is a member of several professional groups and is a frequent speaker at national and regional mathematics meetings.

Betsy Farber received her Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Penn State University and her Master’s degree in mathematics from the College of New Jersey. Since 1976, she has been teaching all levels of mathematics at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where she currently holds the rank of professor. She is particularly interested in developing new ways to make statistics relevant and interesting to her students and has been teaching statistics in many different modes—with the TI-84 Plus, with MINITAB, and by distance learning as well as in the traditional classroom. A member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), she is an author of The Student Edition of MINITAB and A Guide to MINITAB. She served as consulting editor for Statistics: A First Course and has written computer tutorials for the CD-ROM correlating to the texts in the Street Series in mathematics.

For the ridiculous price of this book, you'd think ...

For the ridiculous price of this book, you'd think it would come with an access code to the Pearson MyStatLab that is a required supplement. It doesn't. You still have to buy the online access separate from this book, which is an additional $95. By purchasing the online access, you'll get an electronic version of the book. Check with your instructor first. I found out too late that I never needed to buy this book and that the electronic version was all that was needed. It's a total racket.

Not Recommended

While most reviews for this book have concerned themselves with the quality of the copy received, or the lack of access to the MyStatLab, my review will focus on the helpfulness of this text in understanding elementary statistics. This version is riddled with errors, particularly in chapters 7 and 9, where numerous definitions go unexplained, and numerous problems can not be solved given the information provided in the Appendix; these include, but are not limited to: missing values for confidence intervals for specified sample sizes, lack of definitions for such terms as x-naught, and limited explanation of margin of error and standard error for correlation. Furthermore, many of the tables and charts are printed at such a size that the details necessary to fully comprehending the theme of the chapter are impossible to discern. All this is in addition to the lack of access to MyStatLab, a bafflingly poor organization of the necessary appendix information, and the general lack of coherence between the chapters.

I understand well that math is a cumulative science, meaning that a student must master with a certain degree of proficiency the chapter prior in order to understand the chapter following, but the manner in which the information is presented and organized in the Larson+Farber text makes this impossible: it is tree, after tree, after tree, without any inclination that a forrest exists outside of the three to four sentences which preface each chapter. In order to succeed on any cumulative final or qualitative statistical analysis, it is necessary for a student to gain at least a moderately nuanced understanding of the forrest as well as the trees, but this text woefully misses the mark.

As a student, I found that this text exacerbated the difficulty I experienced in my elementary statistics class, and the price of the text, relative to the quality of its explanations, to be an unjustified onus upon the student. If you're a professor and you are considering the Larson+Farber text as the foundation of your course, I highly recommend that you consider the alternative options to this text.

Good case book

I'm using this book in my Audit II class. It's a supplement to our standard text for the course. It seems very easy to read, and the cases are much more interesting than your average accounting text--especially if you're into this sort of thing!! The questions at the end of each case sometimes go beyond what you might find in an auditing text, so they challenge the student to not just regurgitate what we have read in the other text last semester. Highly recommended.

Hélène Desportes, born in 1620, was the first child of French parents to be born in Quebec and to survive. For nine years, she lived in Samuel de Champlain’s Habitation. In 1629, the little settlement was captured by the English. Hélène, along with the majority of the other French settlers, was put on an English ship and taken to France. She returned to Quebec in 1634 and spent the remainder of her life in the little colony. She was married twice, had fifteen children, and seventy grandchildren. No portrait of Hélène exits. There are no memoirs, no diaries, nor any letters to guide the biographer. Nevertheless, there are public records and other primary sources from which we are able to piece together her life. This, then, is her remarkable story, set against the backdrop of France’s efforts to establish a colony in the New World along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

Hélène's World includes a lot of the history of early Quebec and French colonizing efforts along the banks of the St. Lawrence River in the New World.  The stories and traditions of seventeenth-century Quebec and France are relevant.  We can better understand Hélène and her French-Canadian neighbors when we know something about the world in which they lived. People are likely to have more in common with their peers than with preceding and future generations. Their daily activities, homes, diet, clothing, and challenges faced, as well as their religious and social values, generally reflect the realities of life and the societal customs for their time and place.

Hélène's World is an admittedly imperfect picture of Hélène Desportes. We can only surmise what she was thinking or feeling. In reality, all biographies are incomplete. We can never know all of the hopes, sorrows, and dreams of another individual. Hélène left no diary, no letters. If we limit ourselves to the official records from church and civil archives, we are drawing a stick figure. Seeing Hélène within the historical and cultural context of the world which she inhabited adds substance to her story and rounds out the picture we have of her life.

About the Author
Susan McNelley, with her Masters in the Humanities, has long been interested in women’s stories, particularly those occurring in other places and in other times. She has also been researching family history for some thirty years. A few years ago, she was able to trace her ancestry back to seventeenth-century Quebec and to Hélène Desportes. Thus began a quest to learn more about what life was like for the early colonists. Hélène’s World, thoroughly researched and documented, is the fascinating story of Hélène Desportes and the other seventeenth-century French-Canadian pioneers.

Helene's World - rare insight into the life of an "ordinary" woman living through extraordinary times

I was so glad to find and purchase Helene’s World by Susan McNelley. The book, tracing the likely life story of Helene Desportes in early New France, was enlightening, enjoyably written, well documented and of special interest to me as a student of history and genealogy. The book filled in and tied together many of the bare facts of history, giving them a narrative and a context. For me, it answered many questions about the pioneer experience, with insights on women, religion, the native population, the situation in France, and conditions of those who survived the first years in New France. Without fanfare, McNelley gives Helene her due for enduring and contributing to the establishment of the colony. I am also a descendent of Helene’s, through her daughter Francoise Hebert and her son Alphonse Morin. French Canadians are fortunate to have so much of our ancestry documented, but the actual story remains quite unknown. McNelley has done an impressive job to illuminate the lives and people of early Canada, who lived at such a precarious and yet fascinating time.

French Canadians will love this book

This book will appeal to French Canadians researching their family trees because almost everyone has Hélène Desportes in their lineage. General readers who enjoy history will enjoy this book because it clearly presents the founding of Québec. It was so easy to imagine how difficult life was in the New World for Europeans, many who came from urban environments. That there are so many Franco-Americans today is a testimony to their perseverance. The book is well cited, and Susan McNelley also provided a synopsis of what happened to Hélène's children.

"Helene's World": A wonderful introduction to the early history of New France

This engaging introduction into the world of the first French colonists of Quebec, invites the reader to enter the everyday world of the colonists, the challenges and the triumphs of surviving and flourishing in this new and alien environment. Written from the perspective of the life of the first girl born in the new colony, it makes the adventure of establishing and adapting European culture to the "new world" very accessible to modern readers. Important, but often neglected aspects of the lives of the colonists, namely securing sufficient food, and, extended family relationships and social bonds, are clearly brought out. Since most histories of New France focus on the missionary efforts of the Jesuits among the Amerind population, the fur trade, or the military/strategic aspects of French colonial rule, this is a fresh approach, comparable to a "family history", at the same time introducing the important aspects of Amerind relations, missionary and other religious aspects of 17th century Colonial life, as well as the effects of the fur trade, relations with the Mother Country, and the characters of Colonial administration.
I think that "Helene's World" should be required reading in all secondary and collegiate-level Introduction to American History classes.
And, as is the case in all really well-written introductions, the reader is drawn to the bibliography and the desire to learn more!

Socialism nightmare

Third in the series, ultra-violent world showing just what could happen if the 'Socialist Planner' types ever succeeded in gaining absolute, world power like they want to. You're at the mercy of the political leadership, and they'll kill you just for convenience sake, as long as they control all the information and all the weapons. Highly recommended!

Well, it's closure at least

Bugger! Another three-star effort from Asher when I was hoping for a return to the sophisticated, engaging style we've seen from him in the past.

"The Jupiter War" is the concluding trilogy to Asher's 'Owner' novels, and it picks up immediately where "Zero Point" left off, so it is worthwhile re-reading that novel - or the last few chapters at least - if you cannot recall those prior events.

Unlike some other reviewers, I did not find this a "masterpiece by a SF master" or a "Brilliant conclusion to this segment of the Owner series". I found it mostly dull, to be honest. And in many places I found sentences written in a more complicated fashion than they needed to be, meaning I was unravelling grammar rather than remaining immersed in the story.

In terms of characters, "The Jupiter War" felt very much like "The Departure" in the way most of the cast had single attributes driving them, and often unpersuasive ones at that.

Serene Galahad, for example, is not even written as a caricature of an evil dictator. She never gets to those lofty heights, but remains an infantile tyrant of such capricious and puerile desires that I just could not take her seriously. Her sole motivation seems to be restoring the Earth to its natural state and in that regard people are a significant part of an environmental loading problem. She's already sorted this out in "Zero Point", but her obsession with the Gene Bank - which Alan Saul has possession of - seems such a single dimensional solution to the problem that it is hard to fathom. And really, it seems that the bulk of the Gene Bank is digitized, so she could have just asked Saul for a copy and he probably would have given it to her! For Supreme Ruler of the Whole World, Galahad is not much of a problem solver...

Saul himself oscillates between the human condition - emotions, petty concerns, family ties and the like - and an impartial AI with no such hormonal baseline. I found him about the same as in "Zero Point" in terms of character and personal development, so he was OK, but his unlikely lapses into fallibility, and especially underestimating the enemy, seemed contrived. The idea was that key characters, and perhaps/especially Hannah, were linking him back to the world of the flesh, but it was a decidedly unpredictable link.

Many other members of the cast are either foils for the action, or increasingly manically drawn. His sister, Var, in particular, disappears into a vortex of psychosis but I found the underlying driver for this thin and unconvincing.

There are some bright spots of course. I found Alex quite engaging, with his fresh but pragmatic take on the world (not to mention his fighting skills, which provided a brief upbeat sequence early on). And Sack, Galahad's "dehumanized, lizard-skin bodyguard" was delightfully droll.

But...and it is a sad and disappointing 'but'...overall, "The Jupiter War" is not a great novel. It slipped by, the superficial characters failing to engage and the plot not making a huge amount of sense given the options available to many of the cast. I certainly was hoping for that 'masterpiece' but instead was given an OK novel for which I paid a premium price.

A satisfying conclusion

I've been a fan of Neal Asher's writing for a while now, the Polity novels were all excellent reads. This latest Owner series took a little while for me to get into as they had a different feel to them, less immediate and visceral than his earlier novels. Once I got into them though I was hooked and that remains the case with this latest and final book in the trilogy - although the ending leaves the storyline open for more books and I hope that will be the case.

For me the great thing about science-fiction is when it tackles big question, at the core of Jupiter War (and the preceeding novels) is trans-humanism, or more specifically the consequences of melding humans with technology. Alan Saul is an interesting character as he balances his once human self with the practicalities of being an AI and integrated not only with his ship but the robots within. We also see the beginnings of others taking similar steps, although I would have liked to have seen a bit more done with these characters, especially the comlife operatives.

This is all set against a dystopian background where the leader of Earth considers humanity a pestilence upon the Earth and uses extreme measures to restore nature to a dying Earth. Despite the advanced technology life for most is a dismal affair and this contrasts with the microcosm of humanity on Saul's ship.

Space battles are also a fun part of many science fiction tales and here we have not only an entertaining battle, but also a well thought out one. The considerations in the engagement provided a few interesting insights, not only for the technology involved but the tactics needed to utilise them.

What we have here is a damn fine science fiction read, it's fast paced and provides a satisfactory conclusion to the trilogy. Although as I said at the beginning the ending did leave me wanting more and I hope that will be the case.
