A classic in the field. Covers the fundamentals of microscopic and macroscopic solidification in exceptional depth, drawing on information across a wide range of disciplines. Updated bibliographies of important references. In-depth captions are provided with each figure to emphasize important physics or highlight the scope. Well-organized. Mathematical development and material/solidification property data included in the Appendices.

An excellent, but advanced text

As the title states, this is a book that covers the fundamentals of solidification, as opposed to providing specific advice regarding practical industrial applications. This book provides a more modern treatment of solidification than classics such as Flemings' "Solidification Processing". It uses stability and perturbation theory to augment the standard treatment of constitutional supercooling. The aim of the book is to describe the structure that is developed, particularly as a function of the rate of cooling. It covers the solidification of Eutectics and Peritectics as well as solidification in general.
Almost half of the book is devoted to 14 appendices, which cover advanced topics such as, heat flow modeling, thermodynamics of rapid solidification, diffusion at a dendrite tip and mass balance equations. The text is generally clearly written and the illustrations are likewise clear. This is an excellent text, but a bit advanced. As such it is more suited to a graduate level course or for engineers that are generally familiar with the more classical treatments of solidification.
