Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism, by Scott Hahn, Kimberly Hahn

The well-known and very popular Catholic couple, Scott and Kimberly Hahn, have been constantly travelling and speaking all over North America for the last few years about their conversion to the Catholic Church. Now these two outstanding Catholic apologists tell in their own words about the incredible spiritual journey that led them to embrace Catholicism. Scott Hahn was a Presbyterian minister, the top student in his seminary class, a brilliant Scripture scholar, and militantly anti-Catholic ... until he reluctantly began to discover that his "enemy" had all the right answers. Kimberly, also a top-notch theology student in the seminary, is the daughter of a well-known Protestant minister, and went through a tremendous "dark night of the soul" after Scott converted to Catholicism. Their conversion story and love for the Church has captured the hearts and minds of thousands of lukewarm Catholics and brought them back into an active participation in the Church. They have also influenced countless conversions to Catholicism among their friends and others who have heard their powerful testimony. Written with simplicity, charity, grace and wit, the Hahns' deep love and knowledge of Christ and of Scripture is evident and contagious throughout their story. Their love of truth and of neighbor is equally evident, and their theological focus on the great importance of the family, both biological and spiritual, will be a source of inspiration for all readers.

Review

"One of the beautiful and bright-shining stars in the firmament of hope for our desperate days is this couple, the Hahns, and this story of their life and their conversion."

-- Peter Kreeft, Author, Back to Virtue

"Dynamic, fresh, and devoted are terms which describe the approach that Scott and Kimberly Hahn take to assist in the renewal of the Church in the United States. Now, with their conversion, they are admirably suited to assist Catholics in re-discovering the treasure that has been entrusted to them. My hope is that many people will benefit from contact with Scott and Kimberly Hahn through their stories of conversion."

--Most Reverend John Myers, Bishop of Peoria

Great Spiritual Food for both RC and other believers in Jesus.
By Phil from Downunder
It started a bit predictably and I wasn't sure I wanted to read on, but I'm glad I did. The climate of the time it was written in did have Evangelicals thinking the Roman Catholic Church was babylon! (Thankfully no Church I have ever been in was like that.) The openness and honesty of Kimberly and her five year struggle are at times hilarious, frustrating but eventually exhilarating. I cried a little because it is also a beautiful love story of a couple who drift apart but then reunite stronger than ever. There is a lot of excellent theology, and this book should be well read and studied by all Catholics so they can give a defense of their faith. I'm saying that positively even though I'm not a Catholic. P.S. As I, a friend and also this book would indicate, Milwaukee, WI, in the 80s and 90s was probably the most spiritual city in America. :)

Somewhat helpful
By M. Webre
The book was helpful in helping me grapple with certain issues as I consider converting to Catholicism. However, the conversion of Scott was not inspiring. He came off as very prideful. He bragged about how good a teacher he was at every opportunity and how he frequently knew so much more than everyone else. Also, it seemed like he turned to the Catholic Church because it validated his own heavenly family New Testament convenant theory. In some ways, it felt more like an academic, intellectual decision than a spiritual one. I missed a sense of humility and awe with his conversion and it came off as self-absorbed.

Kimberly's conversion was more inspiring. She did not convert until she felt God leading her to convert even though her marriage suffered for several years. She described what appeared to be genuine moments of heavenly inspiration.

It was an interesting read.

A refresher of Catholic faith
By Judy K. Polhemus
Scott Hahn, Kimberly Hahn, and their road to Catholicism turned out to be much more problematic than I had anticipated. I've heard of this couple so long that I assumed, wrongly, that their conversion was easy. It was anything but easy. "Rome Sweet Home: Our Journey to Catholicism" is their story, told by both alternately, of a difficult conversion.

Kimberly came from a family of Presbyterian ministers and herself planned to be a pastor. After meeting Scott, dating for a while, separating to settle as friends, then finally deciding to marry, at that point Kimberly wanted more than anything to be a pastor's wife. That was the major discrepancy in their story, but in following the biblical command of submitting to the husband's leadership, they had no choice.

I recently joined a Catholic book club with this book as our first reading. As a former Protestant myself, I waded through the vitriolic anti-Catholic words that Scott and Kimberly spewed prior to acknowledging the rightness of Catholic beliefs. One club member grew angry in reading the section, but having heard those accusations against Catholics all my life, I knew exactly that mindset (not a pretty sight, mind you).

Scott had the distinct advantage of having time to study every night, earning degrees, having detailed debates with other students, professors, and great scholarly minds all over the country. Each time he tried to disprove a Catholic belief, he found each to be true. First Luther fell, then other Protestant leaders, until Scott was faced with his conscience: convert or live a lie. Kimberly could not join him. Not yet.

I felt sorry for Kimberly, raising children, leading study groups, crusades, but not going where Scott was headed. They wavered in their marital connection. As one member of our group pointed out, she was not sure just exactly when Kimberly was convicted. Nor is it clear.

If anyone asked what was the most benefit I gained from this read, I would say: The book made me want to locate my old study books on the early church and reconnect with the Word of God. That's more than worthy of any book.
