Rock star busta

So my buddy Pete finds a bag of books outside his apartment one morning and takes it inside. A bunch of poetry books were in it, including this one by this dude Joshua Clover, who looks like he's trying to be a rock star on the photo on that little flap at the back of the book (shirt unbuttoned, dark shades, standing on his deck he was probably up partying all night after winning that Whitman prize).. I wasn't expecting much, poetry's not my thing, hated it ever since Whitman and Dickinson in high school, but there were some poems I could relate to, like the ones about the Gulf War (which I was in, Airborne all the way) though it kind of made me want to take this Clover dude to the wall since I was there and saw a lot of really crazy stuff and he's back at his little graduate school drinking coffee, hitting on my girlfriend, writing his poems, I think they're against the war. There's also a poem that you have to turn the book sidewise to read it, which is pretty different and cool I guess. All in all, this isn't too bad for poetry but I wonder if the poems would be better if Clover didn't strut so much? Like, de-frost your hair and see how that goes.

The Willed vs the Felt

A remarkably self-indulgent first book by a writer too old to be this immature and irresponsible with the language. All formal flair...and very little else. Clover DOES experiment wonderfully and fascinatingly with the surface shimmer of his subjects, but this kind of willed approach to the making of poems results, too often I think, in work that borders on the offensive. (A meditation on the Holocaust, for example, becomes a light-hearted, witty exercise in form.) This is a major award--the Whitman--and likely to make Clover's career. Hopefully he will earn the coming gush of praise with a more deeply felt second book.

I read this book on recommendation and I am rather disappointed, but then again the friend who recommended the book to me is also in love with performance poetry. And now it makes sense: I bet if read aloud, if PERFORMED, this work would astonish me, for it is mostly made up of fly-by-night form-bound lines that have very little substance on the pages but I bet sound real nice out loud.I can't recommend this; in fact, I suggest serious poetry readers stay away from it.

Wow! This book saved my sanity!

I don't typically leave reviews, so here goes:

For 10 months I have been having an allergic reaction to something...??? My doctor could not figure out what. I did the whole steroid thing, then, a Chinese Herbalist, which did help some. But, I still could not find what I was allergic to. I was going to go to an allergist but they said that it may or may not find the allergy that I'm allergic to. My quote was $300 for the first office visit and $1200 for the allergy test. If they felt certain that they would find the allergy it would be worth that amount of money to me. The allergy was causing a horible rash around my mouth and eyes. Well, in desperation, trying to learn about muscle testing I happened upon this book on Amazon.

I received the book and finished reading it the first day. I normally read a book like this maybe one chapter a day or week... I do enjoy learning about how our bodies work. However, with this book I knew that I had finally found the answer to my allergy search.

I learned what allergy I had, why my body had developed the allergy and the appropriate antedote to correct the allergy. Within the first day I noticed a difference. Within 3 days I was a different person. I am feeling much better and am on my way to recovery. I know this won't be a "miracle cure." But, at least now, I have hope to be well again. I cannot tell you how much this book has affected my life. If you are fighting an unknown allergy then take the time to read this book. If I had not had an allergy I would still find this book VERY interesting.

He goes into great depth about common ailments (high blood pressure, arthritis, infertility, gout, anemia, toxemia, obesity, etc.) and how to correct them. The book's subjects are a little broken up, but I simply got a highlighter with stickies and marked the pages that applied to me. This can be a little frustrating, but the benefits FAR outweigh the lack of subject organization.

There are detailed hand-drawn pictures of how to do muscle testing. For the most part, they were very easy to follow. He describes how to muscle test for allergies, lack of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. He also tells you how to pick out the right supplement for you (no allergic reaction.) He decribes how to get the vitamins, minerals and amino acids out of food sources, herbs, vitamins & homeopothy. He also covers gems, etc. I personally skipped that chapter, but the other stuff was incredible.

I have recommended this book to several people already! I hope you find it as incredible as I have.

Update on 2/8/2012: After 1 1/2 years of using this book I am still referring to it. I have since decided to take a professional herbalism course. I am able to use some of the information from this book to add to my course books; for instance: if I have a headache behind my right eye I can juice a carrot and celery and my headache will go away. I promise this works better than Ibuprofen. You must try it to believe it. I wouldn't have believed it prior to being in such bad physical shape. I am now a believer. And, I am not a tree-hugger or totally crunchy or the granola type. I promise.

Also, for those that have made comments about how does Muscle Testing work: We home school. During science one day we were watching Aurora Lipper's video science (she was truly a NASA rocket scientist) was explaining that everything has a positive and negative energy. She had a glass of water in her hand. She said "Even this glass of water has a positive and negative energy. There is a push and a pull to our bodies that we don't even recognize." I exclaimed "That is the best description I have heard to explain how muscle testing works." Our bodies recognize the energy - even though we are not even aware that they are.

Great to Have in Your Health Arsenal

For those who wish to take more responsibility for their own health & family's health, this is a helpful resource to have on hand.
Harkens back to a time when common ailments were treated at home with herbs and other foods. The outcome always seemed better in the long run. Also, was fascinated by some interesting signs of deficiencies, e.g., when corners of the mouth have a downturn you have a deficiency of potassium (on the right side) or of sodium (on the left side.) Thought I was just aging badly. Now, I supplement to build that up in my system.
There are other diagnostic tools that seem be out there. But, I had formerly gone thru the tests and they are helpful; the body does speak!

I am only 50 pages into this book and am COMPLETELY floored with the AMAZING amount and quality of information on healing all kinds of allergies and dis-eases with minerals, amino acids, and vitamins. He provides you with complete instructions on Advanced Muscle Testing, what symptoms wouldlook like in deficiency state, what the vit. or mineral does in the body, what anti-aging properties it may have,what fat dissolving properties it has,
what co-factor nutrients are required to get the best results, what exposures or conditions will deplete the nutrient, etc. etc. And that is just the beginning of a 392 page book on health issues and nutrition!
Heck, I had never even HEARD of Vitamin T before, but he says it will help anemia, hemophilia and improve a fading memory! And I already took several nutrition courses and his info. is WAAAAAY beyond their levels!!!

Yes, I used to think that Muscle Test Reponse was a "twilight zone" method of diagnosing deficiencies, until I discovered it worked wonderfully for self-diagnosis. Dr. Lepore makes it easy to figure out
what deficiencies you are up against and how to fix them!

Honestly, for the cheap price it costs, this book is my No. 1 favorite book on Nutrition I have ever run across. Thank God for Trinity College of Natural Health and their Certified Nutritional Counseling coursework! Now, after all these years, I'm FINALLY getting answers to some of the most thorny health problems I and loved ones have faced. :-) At last, Dr. Lepore, you have introduced me to the power to heal on the deepest level! About the Author
H.J.R. Murray was an English school inspector and prominent chess historian. His father was the first editor of the Oxford English Dictionary. Murray only published one other book during his lifetime, A History of Board Games Other Than Chess. He lived in England.

If you like tons of historical details...

If you buy books by the pound this one is certainly worth the price! But, all kidding aside, it's an amazingly detailed discussion about where chess came from, the varieties it morphed into, and how it traveled the world up until the nineteenth century. The 900 pages of text and countless footnotes show how the author has researched thousands of literary and historical documents for insight into the ancient origins and development of the game. Also included are anecdotes about those who played it, loved it, hated it, made it illegal, and condemned it as the work of the devil. While chess was at times regarded as a substitute for warfare, apparently some actual battles were lost because the army's leader was busy playing chess while he should have been commanding his troops. The author discusses early versions that were played with dice, others that were four-sided, sometimes played on a blank board without squares, and sometimes with huge boards and hundreds of pieces. When the author mentioned versions in which the captured pieces were added to your own side, or where players were allowed to arrange pieces in any order they wished it reminded me of Fischer's attempt to spice up the game with similar innovations.
But it can be slow going when wading through the massive amount of information about foreign kingdoms, their rulers, and so on. This is an academic history book which contains more details than most readers will want both in the body text and the footnotes. And it ends in the nineteenth century. The original version of this reprint is where most chess writers have gone when in need of a reliable source of chess history, but probably not for a casual Sunday afternoon read.

Yeah! That's right, Literati... 900 PAGES!

I've owned my copy of this exceptional history for almost 30 years. It launched my avocation as an amateur chess historian. I've always had the sense that Murray's 1913 book is likely more accurate in that he was closer to the past than more recent chess historians. What new can be discovered? Carbon dating of ancient pieces, perhaps, but as to recorded history there are very few themes that are better recorded than chess. Everything SINCE 1913 is recorded a thousand times over, that's for sure. It was a great pleasure for me to discover 19 chess problems attributed to `Ala'addin at-Tabrizi (Tabriz, Persia), commonly called Kwaja `Ali ash-Shatranji (Great Ali of the Game of Chess). According to Ibn `Arabshah (died 1450), biographer of great Moghul emperor Timur the Lame (aka Tamerlane), `Ala'addin was an attorney and court-appointed historian. Few realize that this person is the traditionist (story-telling historian) who concocted some of the now-famous children's stories in the 1001 Arabian Nights, mostly featuring himself as the protagonist Aladdin! He was the greatest chessplayer in the world circa 1375. He could play four blindfolded games at once, while also playing two games of Pachisi and carrying on casual conversation with his friends!

For those with no desire to pour over many ancient diagrams and detailed gamescores from the entire last millenium (all the while trying to bear in mind confusing pre-16th century rules), there are still 650 pages of great reading here for you. Read about gruesome Gran Guignol chess (page 37), Conquistador Commander Diego Lopez' account of the first Portuguese expedition off Malacca in 1509 when a Javan mainlander boarded the ship and immediately recognized the game (page 96), or have a darkside chuckle over the 13th century chessboard murder of Charlemagne's nephew Berthelot at the hands of Renaud de Montaubon (page 741). Read about the chessboard seduction of Guy of Warwick (page 436) and discover Alaskan Yakutat Koluschan chess pieces that predate the arrival of Columbus by 50 years (page 374). Find Lucena's 1497 description of en passant pawn capturing (page 784). Discover little known facts such as the bishop piece shape actually symbolizing the tusk and mouth of the elephant (that's what it used to be in the Indian army). Learn that those Egyptian tomb-paintings that look like people playing chess actually depict a game called Senet (don't let anyone tell you otherwise), which is a chase game more like canasta or backgammon (the only living game older than chess). Murray knew that a hundred years ago! Did you know that the pawn and knight are borrowed from games much older than chess (which emerged in the 5th century Punjab)? This and much, much more await you in Murray's History of Chess.

The Wait was worth it!

This magnum opus by Murray is amazing. I first got turned onto it in Cleveland, Ohio where The Library Main Campus, Special Collections houses the world's largest chess collection and the curator turned me onto this book. I readily admit that I have encountered difficulty while reading since I am relatively new to the game of chess. Having said that, there is no short explanations given here, and is superb in dealing with the Birth, and Historical significance of the game. No library is complete without it. Thanks for the new reissue.
